Discover Niederleierndorf: Pilgrimage and Architectural History
Accommodation in Niederleierndorf
Niederleierndorf is a popular place of pilgrimage. The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary provides a focal point for its religious tradition; historic architectural features and the “Fen South of Niederleierndorf” nature reserve add to the picture. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose from different themes: church art, architectural history or nature.
Pilgrimage, Church Art and Events
The present-day pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1740 to replace a medieval predecessor. The base of the tower is all that remains of the earlier building. A large ceiling painting in the nave depicts the history of the miraculous image venerated there. The church thus brings together different historical periods: the surviving tower base points to the predecessor church, while the present church dates from the 18th century.
The Laabertal Pilgrimage Route leads directly to Niederleierndorf and the Catholic pilgrimage and curacy church of the Assumption of Mary. This art-historical circular route takes visitors to the pilgrimage sites of the Laber Valley and the Hallertau hop-growing region. Check the current conditions for the route before setting out. On 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary is celebrated with a festive service and a procession through Niederleierndorf. In May, processions of supplication take place from Schierling to Niederleierndorf; it is best to check their current dates with the parish. If you would like to include one of these occasions in your trip, check the specific arrangements in advance.
Architectural History and Traces of Gitting Castle
The architectural styles also tell of different periods. The former administrative building of Gitting Castle at Wiesenweg 1 is a two-storey building with a gabled roof, dating from the 18th century. Its core is probably older; alterations have been made since the 19th century. The former benefice house at HauptstraĂźe 12 is also two storeys high, but has a hipped roof and a framed portal. It dates from around the middle of the 18th century.
Of the former Gitting Castle complex between Oberleierndorf and Niederleierndorf, the northern part of the moat and slight rises in the ground remain. The medieval castle site known as “Gitting Castle” is a designated archaeological monument. The surviving traces in the terrain and the historic building types offer different clues to the area’s history: the former castle complex on the one hand, and the administrative building and benefice house, with their respective architectural styles and dates, on the other.
Fen, Outdoor Pool and Refreshments
The “Fen South of Niederleierndorf” nature reserve covers 62.18 hectares. The Kelheim district protects it, together with the Sippenauer Moor and Goldau, as a landscape shaped by water. These areas include fens, oxbow lakes and floodplain landscapes.
Niederleierndorf outdoor pool is heated and has a non-swimmer area, a toddlers’ pool and a small water slide. Facilities also include two swings, a table tennis table, a sandpit and a kiosk. If you are planning a visit, check the seasonal opening hours and availability of the facilities listed above in advance. Zachhof at Hauptstraße 8 in Langquaid-Niederleierndorf is a farm café with a beer garden. As opening hours may change, it is also worth checking the latest information before stopping by.
More to Explore in the Wider Langquaid Destination
In the wider Langquaid destination, three circular routes offer a clear comparison of distances. The nature trail is about three kilometres long, the forest educational trail is six kilometres, and the Legends and Folktales Trail is about 15 kilometres. All three circular routes start in the Marktweiher recreation area.
Cultural attractions are also part of this broader look at Langquaid. The interactive “ErLebnis Geschichte” museum in the Kastnerhaus features the permanent exhibitions “4,000 Years Hidden – The Treasure of Langquaid” and “Lovingly Granted to Bavaria – Langquaid and the Wittelsbachs.” In Hellring, in the north of Langquaid, a pilgrimage festival is held every year on the second Sunday in October. The Langquaid civic festival is a longstanding tradition and takes place every two years in June. These events add their own highlights to the year; it is best to check specific schedules and dates before travelling.
