Langquaid combines interactive local history, recurring festivals and circular walking routes of varying lengths. The Kastnerhaus features two permanent exhibitions, while Paring also has traces of the past. The Marktweiher recreation area is the starting point for three circular routes. Other highlights include wet meadows in the valley of the GroĂźe Laber and a stork nest above the rooftops of Langquaid. You can therefore treat culture, festival dates and nature trails as different focal points for your stay.

Exhibitions and Monastery History

The interactive “ErLebnis Geschichte” museum in the Kastnerhaus features the permanent exhibitions “4000 Years Hidden – the Treasure of Langquaid” and “Freely Granted to Bavaria – Langquaid and the Wittelsbachs”. One focuses on the Treasure of Langquaid, the other on Langquaid and the Wittelsbachs. Together, the exhibitions offer two different ways to explore the town’s history.

Another historical connection can be found in Paring, northeast of Langquaid. The Klosterberg hill preserves the remains of a once-extensive monastery complex, arranged around St. Michael’s Church. The museum and Klosterberg thus represent different topics: the exhibitions in the Kastnerhaus and the surviving traces of the former complex in Paring.

Festivals with Their Own Rhythms

In Hellring, north of Langquaid, a pilgrimage festival is held every year on the second Sunday in October. The Langquaid civic festival is a traditional event held every two years in June. The festivals therefore follow different schedules: the pilgrimage festival returns every October, while the civic festival takes place in June every other year. If one of the festivals is the reason for your trip, check the date for the relevant year.

Circular Routes by Distance

Three circular routes start in the Marktweiher recreation area. The nature trail is about three kilometres long, the forest education trail is six kilometres, and the legends and folklore trail is about 15 kilometres. All three are circular routes that start at the same point. You can compare their distances directly when choosing: the nature trail is the shortest, the forest education trail is in between, and the legends and folklore trail is the longest.

Wet Meadows and Pilgrimage Route

The wet meadows in the valley of the Große Laber are a habitat for storks. Every year, a pair of storks nests above the rooftops of Langquaid—a recurring natural feature of the town alongside the trails at Marktweiher.

The market town of Langquaid and the pilgrimage church of St. Ottilia are located on the 115-kilometre Monasteries & Churches Loop, part of the European VIA NOVA pilgrimage route. The pilgrimage route and circular trails thus add two different travel options to the historic sites: a longer regional route and trails starting in the Marktweiher recreation area.
