Wellheim lies in the middle of the Urdonau Valley. Here, local history meets striking landscape features: the Urdonautal Museum Wellheim is devoted to nature and geological history as well as the history of the market town, while wooded hills, karst springs and unusual rock formations add to the scenery nearby. This combination offers a range of ideas for planning your trip, from exhibits and church art to trails and landscape features.

The Museum and Wellheim’s History

The Urdonautal Museum Wellheim displays exhibits in 13 showcases covering natural and landscape history, geological history, prehistory and early history, the history of the market town and its districts, and industrial history. Its wide range of topics thus spans everything from the formation and character of the landscape to life and work in the market municipality. The museum opened in 1990 in the market town of Wellheim’s former gatehouse. The exhibits also include a model of Wellheim Castle as it appeared in the 14th century, providing a tangible historical reference point. A total of five castle sites have been documented within the municipality of Wellheim.

St. Andreas: Building History and Remembrance

The Catholic parish church of St. Andreas stands on the western edge of Wellheim, at Burgstraße 3. Its origins date back to the 11th or 12th century; surviving Baroque stuccowork and ceiling paintings date from around 1700. A memorial plaque commemorates Count Konrad von Helfenstein and his wife. Konrad von Helfenstein held the lordship of Wellheim from 1458 to 1473. The church therefore brings together both the area’s older architectural history and a specific figure from the history of the lordship of Wellheim.

Rock Formations, Forest and Springs

Nearby lies the Galgenberg, a wooded, elongated hill about 50 metres high. A karst spring is located at its foot. The Schutter Spring also has geological features of interest: several individual springs can be seen at the spring pool. During renaturation work in 2008, bedrock Jurassic limestone was exposed behind the spring pool. The Zigeunerloch, meanwhile, is a massive, unusual rock formation in dense beech forest, marked by fissures and grottoes. A signposted walking trail from Wellheim leads there. These three places showcase different aspects of the surrounding area: wooded terrain, spring water and striking rocks.

In the wider landscape, the Wellheim Dry Valley winds in broad loops from Rennertshofen through the Jurassic landscape of the Southern Franconian Alb. The Urdonautalsteig, a certified quality trail, passes through the municipality of Wellheim. The Felsensteig is 4 kilometres long, marked in red and rated difficulty level I. It includes short, easy climbing sections; sturdy footwear and sure footing are required. The trail passes the Hintere Konsteiner Wand, Dohlenfelsen, Lucky Luke, Merltürme, Weiße Wand, Fensterlwand, Oberlandwand, Aichaer Wand, Oberländer climbing area and Lochwand. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Choose the Focus That Suits Your Trip

The places and trails described also differ in their location: St. Andreas is in Wellheim, while Galgenberg and Zigeunerloch are nearby, and the Urdonautalsteig and Felsensteig pass through the municipality. This gives you the option of choosing between cultural and natural attractions when planning your trip, without conflating the different route details.
