Lenggries: Cycling Routes, the Isar and Culture
Accommodation in Lenggries
There are many ways to discover Lenggries: take a circular cycling tour along rivers, go on an excursion to Lake Sylvenstein, or explore the cultural history of the Isarwinkel. This variety can help you decide what you want your stay to focus on—and what to look for when choosing accommodation.
Outdoors: the lake, cycling and winter cross-country trails
Lake Sylvenstein lies about 15 kilometres south of Lenggries. Its crystal-clear water invites you to swim and relax. The lake is also a starting point for a hike and is close to the Isar Cycle Path. This means you can enjoy the water, go hiking or cycle—all in the same excursion area.
One specific option for an active day out is the easy 13-kilometre circular cycling route from Lenggries via Wegscheid to Leger. It takes about one hour, and both the start and finish are at the Isar Bridge in Lenggries. Along the way, the route follows the Isar and Jachen rivers through idyllic floodplain meadows. The estimated time can help you plan your day, but check current trail conditions before setting off.
There are 42 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails in the Lenggries area in winter. North of the Brauneck mountain station, there is also a 1.5-kilometre illuminated night trail leading to the Gilgenhöfe. Check current trail and grooming information before planning your outing.
Cultural history in the Isarwinkel
The Lenggries Local History Museum presents cultural and historical treasures from the Isarwinkel across seven exhibition areas. Its museum trail takes visitors from customs, crafts, and farming and alpine agriculture to the history of timber rafting—a craft for which Lenggries was and still is known. Anyone interested in the region’s development will find a range of topics here, from everyday life and work to timber rafting.
The Lenggries municipal artists’ and cultural trail offers a different perspective. It comprises 22 stations with information panels about artists and cultural figures from the municipality. Together with the Local History Museum’s exhibition areas, it offers a way to explore culture that takes in both the history of the Isarwinkel and local artists.
Hohenburg is also part of the region’s history. Once the most important centre of power in the area, the castle was destroyed in a devastating fire on 21 July 1707. Its story adds a specific historical turning point to the topics covered by the museum and cultural trail.
Getting here and choosing the right accommodation
You can reach Lenggries from Munich by BRB train. Check the current timetable for your journey.
If your travel group has different interests, it can help to decide on your priorities first: should a cycling route shape the day, would you like to spend time at the lake, or are you particularly interested in cultural history? In winter, you could also include the cross-country ski trails in your plans. Then look for accommodation whose specific location suits your plans. That way, your choice will reflect the excursions that matter to you, rather than a general idea of a holiday.
Lenggries in the wider region
If you extend your plans to include the wider Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen destination, you can also explore the regional network of trails. The Tölzer Land Health Climate Park comprises 37 routes across a network of more than 340 kilometres between Bad Heilbrunn, Bad Tölz, Kochel am See, Wackersberg and Lenggries. Check the current status of the routes before planning your trip.
