Bad Tölz combines a historic townscape with cultural attractions and trails along the Isar. In Marktstraße, gabled houses and Lüftlmalerei tell the story of 18th-century architecture; the Rafting Trail (Flößerweg) explores the history of river-based crafts. Other attractions include the town museum and Kalvarienberg. You can tailor your stay to suit different interests: local history, culture, or walking and cycling tours.

Townscape, culture and history

Marktstraße is lined with large gabled houses dating from the 18th century, many of whose façades are decorated with Lüftlmalerei. If you prefer to explore the sights at your own pace, you can use audio guides. Among other places, they take you through historic Marktstraße and to Kalvarienberg.

Kalvarienberg includes the Garden of Gethsemane, a Way of the Cross and Golgotha Hill with its Prison Chapel. The complex also includes Kalvarienberg Church, with its twin steeples, and Leonhardi Chapel. Gabriel-von-Seidl-Kurpark offers a different setting, with a pond, extensive lawns and mature trees.

The Bad Tölz Town Museum explores the art and cultural history of the entire Isarwinkel region, as well as the cultural heritage of the Leonhardi Ride. The Bad Tölz Leonhardi Ride takes place on 6 November in the town’s streets and lanes; if the date falls on a weekend, the event may be rescheduled. Tölzer Kurhaus was inaugurated in June 1914 and provides a venue for concerts, theatre, weddings and conferences. If you are planning around a particular date, it is worth checking the current events programme.

Trails with different focuses

The Geocultural Trail is a 30-kilometre circular route. You can explore it in stages or in full, on foot or by bicycle; it is connected to the existing network of hiking trails. The Rafting Trail runs along the Isar in Bad Tölz and brings together local history, nature and craftsmanship. Information boards, interactive stations and original sites invite you to explore these themes along the way. While the Geocultural Trail is designed as a longer circuit, the Rafting Trail focuses on traces of the rafting industry and its connection to the town.

The spa park and the town’s sights also offer different experiences: ponds, lawns and mature trees shape the atmosphere in the park, while the religious buildings and stations take centre stage at Kalvarienberg. Audio guides let you explore Marktstraße and Kalvarienberg independently. This makes it easy to balance cultural visits and walks according to your interests, without having to plan the same kind of outing for every activity.
