Obertraubling combines insights into rural life and traditional crafts with churches and paths through the countryside. The town reveals different sides: the local history museum is in Oberhinkofen, which has been incorporated into the municipality, while the Rund-um-Obertraubling trail takes in natural and local sights. When planning your stay, you can start by considering the themes you want to shape your holiday: local history, architecture or time outdoors.

Local History and Landmark Buildings

The Pius Detterbeck Obertraubling Local History and Farm Museum is 3 km southwest of Obertraubling, in the incorporated village of Oberhinkofen. In the village’s old centre, it is housed in a farm building opposite St. Michael’s Church. The museum showcases traditional crafts and depicts life on a farm and traditional occupations. These themes give local history a tangible framework, with a focus on craftsmanship and rural work.

The churches and memorials also tell different aspects of the town’s history. St. George’s Parish Church has a distinctive 56-metre-high tower. The memorial chapel for those killed or missing in the world wars was built in 1921. Together, these buildings offer different points of entry for exploring Obertraubling’s cultural history: the unmistakable height of a church tower on the one hand, and a place of remembrance with a clear historical connection on the other.

Paths and Local Recreation in Obertraubling

The former Frauenholz military training area now offers opportunities for local recreation, with cycling and hiking trails. Another way to explore the area on foot is the Rund-um-Obertraubling trail. It follows the Litzelbach stream along paved, field and forest paths. The different surfaces give the route its character without implying that the trail has a uniform surface throughout.

The trail starts and ends at the town hall. Sights along the route include a nature trail and the Apisbrunnen fountain near Obertraubling Town Hall. This means the same route brings together a nature-focused attraction and a named fountain in the town centre. When planning your visit, you can consider these stops alongside the route along the Litzelbach and its varied surfaces. Frauenholz offers a separate alternative if cycling or hiking trails are your main focus.

Getting There and Choosing Your Stay

Obertraubling can be reached by rail lines 930 and 880, as well as RVV bus lines 30, 31, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21 and 20; the church is listed as the stop. Check the current timetable before travelling.

More Places to Explore in the Wider Regensburg Destination

Across the wider Regensburg destination, different places offer their own cultural and scenic highlights. In Donaustauf stands the Walhalla, a Neoclassical memorial and hall of honour on the Danube. Since 1842, it has honoured notable Germans and figures associated with German history with marble busts and commemorative plaques. Its exterior is designed in the Doric style and comprises 52 columns; the Walhalla is also one of Germany’s most significant Neoclassical buildings.

The approaches are also a useful practical consideration when planning a visit to the Walhalla: from the bus stop, it is about a 20-minute walk uphill via 358 steps. From Regensburg, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé also travel along the Danube from the Stone Bridge to the foot of the Walhalla from Easter through October. Check the scheduled sailing dates in advance.

The Nepal-Himalaya Park in Wiesent offers a different focus. The nine-hectare park combines Asian culture and nature, with a Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous Asian works of art. Its grounds include a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species. In Wolfsegg, the castle is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the region.

Baierwein can also be explored as a theme across the wider Regensburg destination: the wine educational trail at the Baierwein Museum in Bach an der Donau is accessible at all times. It provides information about the past and present of Baierwein and introduces the local grape variety, Weißer Elbling. When planning your trip, you can weigh Obertraubling’s own local and walking themes against the other distinct cultural and scenic experiences throughout the Regensburg destination.
