Patersdorf can be explored through a variety of themes: hiking trails through the Patersdorf Mountains, religious trails, St. Martin’s Parish Church and the district teaching garden on the northern edge of town offer different perspectives on the landscape and local history. You can choose between outdoor activities, art and history, and gardening knowledge. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first consider which of these interests will shape your trip.

Hiking and Religious Trails

The “Patersdorf Mountains” panoramic region in the Teisnach Valley offers excellent conditions for hiking through the countryside in the municipality of Patersdorf. Hiking trails in the municipality of Patersdorf and neighboring municipalities crisscross the Patersdorf Mountains; the views are highlighted as a high point of each hike. Thus, the hiking experience described includes not only the trails themselves, but also the views of the landscape.

The Ecumenical Chapel Trail in the Teisnach Valley includes 25 religious stations. It passes through Zachenberg, Patersdorf and Gotteszell, then returns to its starting point at the Osterbrünnl Chapel near Ruhmannsfelden. The number of stations and the specified circular route give the trail a clear religious focus.

A Way of the Cross in Tradweging also leads to a religious destination: a chapel stands in a clearing, reached by a path with twelve stations. This trail and the chapel trail in the Teisnach Valley are separate ways to include religious sites in Patersdorf in your travel plans.

Church and Garden: History and Knowledge

St. Martin’s Parish Church in Patersdorf dates back to the 9th century. Specific works of art add to this historical connection: the paintings on the high altar and the Sebastian Altar were painted by Joseph Rauscher (1683–1744) and date to 1722. The church thus brings together a building with a history reaching far back in time and precisely identified altar paintings from the 18th century.

The district teaching garden is located on the northern edge of town. A 2014 report gives its size as about one hectare and notes that it has around 200 fruit trees. The garden is intended as a place to learn about horticultural expertise, particularly through guided tours and courses. Its purpose, then, is not simply to showcase the number of trees, but also to share knowledge about gardening.

More to Explore in the Larger Regen Destination

There are more experiences to enjoy in the Regen destination. The town of Regen and its surrounding area have 13 terrain therapy trails. The beer-themed hiking tour is about five kilometers long; almost half of the route runs directly along the Regen River. In Regen, the beer and ice cellars are regularly presented as the historic “Regen Underworld” during public guided tours, which explain their history. Near Weißenstein, the quartz rocks by the castle ruins were placed under nature protection in 1940 because of their geological significance. The quartz ridge near Weißenstein is an important habitat for rare heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species adapted to nutrient-poor locations.
