Discover Geiersthal
Accommodation in Geiersthal
Get to know Geiersthal through its circular hiking trails, the history of its church and local points of interest. Five circular trails lead back to Geiersthal and vary in length. There is also a park in the town centre, as well as a pond and a children’s playground in the newly redesigned area around the town hall, school, church and “Zum Kramerwirt” hotel. These features give you specific points of reference when looking for accommodation for a stay that combines outdoor activities and local history.
Choose a circular hiking trail by distance
The five signposted circular hiking trails pass through different places and return to Geiersthal. Their stated distances range from about five to sixteen kilometres:
- Circular hiking trail 1 is about 5 km long and leads from the branch church in Geiersthal via Felburg, Knoglberg and AltnuĂźberg back to Geiersthal.
- Circular hiking trail 2 is 8 km long; its route passes through AltnuĂźberg, Oberleiten, Pfranzgrub and Holzhaus.
- Circular hiking trail 3 is 12 km long and runs via Felburg, Gumpenried and AltnuĂźberg.
- Circular hiking trail 4 covers 16 km. On the way to Geiersthal, it passes through Fernsdorf, Frankenried, Prenning, Tradweging, Linden, Hartmannsgrub, Oberberging and Höfing.
- Circular hiking trail 5 is 10.5 km long and leads via AltnuĂźberg, Knoglberg, Gumpenried and Felburg.
In a direct comparison of distances, circular hiking trail 1 is the shortest and trail 4 the longest of the five routes. The trails in between are listed as 8, 10.5 and 12 km long. This lets you compare the distances; the places named also show how the routes differ.
Church history and places of interest in the town centre
The church in Geiersthal served the former original parish of Geiersthal and was first mentioned in a document in 1209. The town therefore has a long ecclesiastical history. Circular hiking trail 1 also starts at the branch church in Geiersthal, then passes through several of the places mentioned before returning to town.
There is a small green park in the town centre where you can take a break. The newly redesigned area around the town hall, school, church and “Zum Kramerwirt” hotel is separate: here, a pond and a children’s playground invite you to linger. If you are out and about with children, the playground is a specific point of reference for a break together; the park adds its own green touch to the town centre.
AltnuĂźberg Castle and its finds
Within the municipality, Altnußberg Castle tells the story of the Nußberger and Degenberger families, for whom it served as a knight’s residence. The castle was completely destroyed after the Böckler War. Its foundations were uncovered again and partly rebuilt in the last century. The history of the area can thus be complemented by a look at a castle complex and its foundations, uncovered at a later date.
Altnußberg Castle Museum displays weapons, jewellery, household objects and everyday items found during excavations in the castle ruins. The artefacts date from the 13th to the 15th century. Visits are possible by appointment. For those interested in culture, the castle’s history is brought to life through artefacts from several centuries.
More topics in the wider Regen travel destination
The wider Regen travel destination offers other distinct topics. In the town of Regen, the beer and ice cellars are regularly presented as the historic “Regener Underworld” during public tours, which explain their history. There are 13 therapeutic terrain trails in and around the town. The Grubhügel cross-country ski trail can be used for both skating and classic diagonal technique, and ice skates and equipment can be rented on site at the Regen Ice Sports Centre. Near Weißenstein, the quartz rocks by the castle ruins were placed under nature protection as early as 1940 because of their geological significance. The Pfahl near Weißenstein is an important habitat for rare heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species adapted to nutrient-poor locations.
