Discover Wildenranna: Village History and Trails
Accommodation in Wildenranna
Wildenranna offers different ways to explore local history and enjoy active days: the historic village centre of Wildenranna reflects the rebuilding that followed the village fire of 1898, while the parish church of Mary, Mother of Sorrows, has its own architectural history and memorials. There is also the W8 Sumpfwiesenweg circular trail and the Danube-Moldau Cycle Route.
Village History and Church Architecture
The official Bavarian list of listed monuments dated 29 January 2026 records the historic village centre of Wildenranna as a village settlement rebuilt after a major fire in 1898. Its classification as a village settlement draws attention to the overall layout of the village. Together with the individual buildings, this provides a way to explore both the history of the rebuilding and specific architectural details.
The parish church of Mary, Mother of Sorrows, in Wildenranna was built in 1904–1906 in Romanesque and Gothic styles. These stylistic references give architecture enthusiasts a precise starting point for distinguishing the period of construction from the architectural forms. The church furnishings also have a distinctive feature: their original finish was uncovered in the parish church.
A freestanding war memorial stands on the south side of the parish church. Construction was completed in 1985, and it was dedicated on 25 May 1986. Memorial plaques on the church wall commemorate participants in the wars of 1870/1871 and the First and Second World Wars. These memorials add further aspects of local history to the church’s architectural history.
On Foot or by Bike
The W8 Sumpfwiesenweg circular trail starts at a free hiking car park in Wildenranna and passes a nature reserve for freshwater mussels. Check the current parking regulations before setting out, as they may change.
The Danube-Moldau Cycle Route is a cycling route between Obernzell and Wildenranna, covering around 8 kilometres; about 5.5 kilometres of it follow the former railway line. The approximate route length and the section on the former railway line provide practical guidance for your ride. Surfaces and signage may change; check current route conditions before setting off.
The two routes offer different experiences: the W8 is a circular walking trail connected with a nature reserve, while the Danube-Moldau Cycle Route is a cycling route with a stated length and a section along the former railway line. Consider which activity best suits your trip, and look for accommodation based on how you plan to spend your days.
