Rivers, forests and thermal baths shape the Passau region. Historic buildings, cycling and hiking trails, and cultural events add further highlights. When looking for accommodation with Passau as your destination, it’s worth first deciding what you want your stay to focus on: history at the open-air museum, getting active on a route, seasonal events, or thermal springs in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. These priorities lead to different destinations in the Passau region and help you choose accommodation in a location that suits your plans.

Landscapes and trails in the Passau region

Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach are home to widely known thermal springs. If you’re also weighing up cycling and hiking options, you’ll find different types of routes: the Danube Cycle Path runs through the Passau region and received a four-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Federation (ADFC). Ratings can change, so checking the current rating may help when planning.

The Passau region is crossed by the Granite Adventure Hiking Trail around Hauzenberg and the Smuggler’s Trail in the Danube Pearls area. Together with the Danube Cycle Path, they offer named options for cycling or hiking days. The Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre adds another highlight: it is located in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, below Untergriesbach. If you’d rather plan your trip around river landscapes and nature experiences or a cycling or hiking route, you can take these different themes into account when choosing your destination.

Open-air museum and historic buildings

The Bavarian Forest Museum Village in Tittling is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. Across 20 hectares, visitors can explore more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890. This time span gives your visit a specific historical context, while the variety of buildings can be explored in one place.

The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments. It also features Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666. The collection brings together residential and agricultural buildings, places of craftsmanship and historic structures. From April to September, the museum village also provides a backdrop for music and cabaret days featuring Bavarian entertainment.

Another cultural option is Ortenburg Castle Culture, an event series organised by the Friends of Ortenburg Castle. From April to December, it features musical events, cabaret performances, spooky nights at Ortenburg Castle, talks and guided tours. The date ranges therefore differ: the museum village hosts its music and cabaret days from April to September, while the Ortenburg series runs from April to December. If events are to determine your travel dates, check the specific dates before making plans.

Choose accommodation based on your planned activities
