Bibertal brings together nature and local history as distinct interests for visitors. The Osterbach stream winds through natural, little-developed meadow valleys that invite you to go for walks and bike rides. Churches, wayside chapels, half-timbered buildings and a Roman burial ground add specific historical themes to the picture.

When choosing accommodation in Bibertal, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Walks and bike rides along the Osterbach stream make for a different day out than a trip centred on churches, wayside chapels and historic houses. Choose your preferred base according to the themes you would like to include in your travel plans.

The Osterbach stream and Cycle Route 1

The Osterbach stream winds through natural, little-developed meadow valleys, making this a landscape destination for walks and bike rides. For a more specific cycling route, Cycle Route 1 passes through Silheim and Ettlishofen on a quiet district road through the Osterbach valley. Another section follows the B10 through Ober- and Unterfahlheim to Echlishausen and BĂĽhl; BĂĽhl is in the neighbouring district of GĂĽnzburg. Further along the route, it passes through Hetschwang and returns to the district of Neu-Ulm shortly before Balmertshofen. The changes of village and district give the route a wider scope. During your stay, you can consider walks in the meadow valley and the cycling route as different ways to spend time outdoors.

Linden trees in Kissendorf

At the northern edge of Kissendorf stands a linden tree around 350 years old, believed to be the second-oldest in Swabia. It is 22 m tall, has a crown 24 m wide and a trunk circumference of 7.20 m. These measurements make the tree a particularly striking nature feature to include in your travel plans. Another linden tree stands by the Gasthaus Rudolph in Kissendorf. The age and size information refers to the linden tree at the northern edge of Kissendorf.

Churches, chapels and historic buildings

In Silheim, the Catholic Church of St Apollonia has a late Gothic core. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in the second quarter of the 18th century; its tower dates from 1730. Also in Silheim is the Gasthof Zahn, a half-timbered building with a gabled roof dating from the 17th century. A wayside chapel from the 18th century stands on the road to GroĂźkissendorf.

Ettlishofen also brings together a range of architectural and historical themes. A half-timbered house dating from the second half of the 17th century stands at DeiblerstraĂźe 20. At the northern end of the village is a wayside chapel with historic furnishings; a medieval stone cross stands beside it. The Catholic Church of St Ulrich and St Leonhard has a late Gothic core and was remodelled in 1834. These buildings represent distinct periods, from medieval features and 17th-century half-timbering to 19th-century remodelling.

Other historic sites include the Roman burial ground north of Opferstetten, at the end of Veilchenweg. The Anhofer Mill lies about 500 m northeast of Ettlishofen. It is a two-and-a-half-storey building from the third quarter of the 19th century. Together with the churches, chapels and houses, it offers a broad range of architectural styles and periods for anyone who wants to include local history in their trip.

More to explore in the wider GĂĽnzburg destination

The wider Günzburg destination also offers other distinctive landscapes. The DonAuwald hiking trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and stretches for around 60 kilometres between Günzburg and Schwenningen. The DonauHänge trail is an 18.5-kilometre circular route between Günzburg and Offingen through the hillside forest. The difference is clear when choosing a route: the DonAuwald hiking trail connects two places over a longer distance, while the DonauHänge is described as a circular route.

Families will also find a dedicated attraction in the wider Günzburg destination: LEGOLAND® Deutschland in Günzburg has 11 themed areas and 68 attractions. The theme park and its adjoining holiday village offer experiences for children aged 2 to 12. These examples show the variety of attractions in the Günzburg destination, while Bibertal has its own highlights: the Osterbach stream, Cycle Route 1 and its historic buildings.
