Günzburg offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: the local history museum explores the city’s history and culture, the Frauenkirche is considered a Rococo masterpiece, and Bürgerpark combines landscape history with opportunities for exercise and relaxation. For longer hikes, the DonAUwald Premium Hiking Trail starts at the railway station and first leads through the historic Bürgerpark.

City history, art and music

Covering more than 600 square metres, Günzburg’s local history museum presents the city’s historical and cultural heritage. Its collection includes prehistoric and Roman archaeology, as well as sacred art from the Gothic period through the 19th century. It also features religious handicrafts from the 18th and 19th centuries, along with objects relating to the history of local rule and everyday culture in Günzburg and the surrounding area. Its broad range of periods and themes makes a visit worthwhile if you would like to learn about more than just one chapter of the city’s history.

Once a month, the “Museumsdonnerstag” event series offers specially designed, exclusive guided tours at Günzburg’s local history museum on a Thursday. Dates may vary, so check the specific date before your visit. For exploring at your own pace, the “LAUSCHTOUR Günzburger Stadtrundgang – Das kleine Wien in Bayerisch-Schwaben” audio guide takes you to key sights in the historic centre in German or English.

Günzburg’s Frauenkirche is considered a Rococo masterpiece by master builder Dominikus Zimmermann. There is also the half-hour concert series “Eine kleine Kirchenmusik”: from May to December, it takes place at 10 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month, except in August. Check the specific concert date in advance if you would like to plan your stay around it.

Market Square and City Tower

Since 1395, one of the region’s oldest weekly markets has been held every Tuesday in Günzburg’s Market Square. If a visit to the market is important to your plans, check the specific date in advance. In summer, the 250-metre stretch from Market Square to the Lower Gate becomes Swabia’s longest street café. The two offerings have different seasonal and scheduling associations: the weekly market takes place on Tuesdays, while the café is a summer feature.

From Günzburg’s City Tower, the view stretches across the Donaumoos to the Alps. On Tuesdays, after the climb, the tower keeper’s room serves white sausages, pretzels and cold drinks. If you plan to stop for refreshments, check what is available before your visit.

Bürgerpark and nature trails

Günzburg’s Bürgerpark was created in 1814 and is one of the early parks modelled on English landscape gardens. It has been a protected natural area since its foundation and is home to botanical rarities. Activities in the park include jogging, walking and reading, as well as simply relaxing in peace—a range of options encompassing both exercise and quiet breaks.

The DonAUwald Premium Hiking Trail starts at Günzburg railway station and first leads through the historic Bürgerpark. Overall, it runs for around 59 kilometres in five stages between Günzburg and Schwenningen. If you are planning the multi-day hike, check current trail conditions before setting off. Near the destination, the DonAUwald is one of the largest contiguous floodplain forest areas along German rivers and is remarkable for its exceptional biodiversity.

Cycling and climbing

Günzburg is considered an ideal starting point for cycling tours in Bavarian Swabia and a rewarding stop for cycle tourists on the European Danube Cycle Path. You can choose between tours around the region and riding a stage of the Danube Cycle Path.

The Günzburg high ropes course, near the LEGOLAND® Holiday Village, offers eight courses, 42 climbing elements and a 15-metre-high climbing wall for adventurers aged four and over. At heights of up to ten metres, there are 300-metre-long zip lines and a hero jump. The details about the courses, climbing wall and zip lines help you assess this as a dedicated activity option.

You can discover Günzburg according to the daily rhythm you have in mind for your stay.
