Königsbrunn: Museums, Heath and Time by the Water
Accommodation in Königsbrunn
Königsbrunn combines nature experiences with unusual insights into archaeology, local history and long-distance trade. The Natural History Museum features the Lech as a nine-metre-long model of a natural, wild river; fish can be observed at underwater viewing points. Outdoors, there is everything from Königsbrunner Heide, which provides a habitat for migrating animal and plant species, to Lake Ilsesee, which has been developed as a local recreation area.
Museums with Different Perspectives
The Archaeological Museum displays a fully preserved skeleton with grave goods from the Bell Beaker period. It also features other archaeological finds from the southern district of Augsburg, presented in their regional context. The Lechfeld Museum focuses on something different: it tells the story of Königsbrunn’s beginnings and depicts the farming life, living conditions and clothing of the settlement’s founders in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Mercateum houses the world’s largest globe based on historical cartography. An exhibition inside explores trade in goods with India and other countries in Asia, Africa, Central America and South America. On a guided tour, you can discover how the globe was made, historical maps and the history of long-distance trade; check the current tour schedule in advance. Art adds to the museum landscape: the Gregor Kruk Gallery in the town hall foyer is probably home to one of the largest collections of works by Gregor Kruk. Archaeological finds, local life stories, cartography and art thus come together in different ways.
Experience Nature: Park, Heath and Lochbach
The Park of the Senses offers a sensory and relaxing experience with its herb garden, barefoot path and Kneipp pools; the Kneipp facilities are fed by groundwater. Those interested in nature in a protected area can follow an approximately 2.5-kilometre nature trail along the Lochbach. Walkers and visitors seeking relaxation can learn more about nature along the way.
Königsbrunner Heide is one of the few remaining parts of the Lech Valley flora corridor and provides a habitat for migrating animal and plant species. Walkers, joggers, inline skaters and cyclists also use the area around the heath. On the heath itself, please stay on the designated paths and leave bicycles at the edge.
Lake Ilsesee: Swimming and Diving
Lake Ilsesee lies on the northeastern edge of the town. Fed by groundwater and formed by gravel extraction, it is a closed body of water that has been developed as a local recreation area. Families can swim there, and the lake also has a water rescue station. Its diverse underwater animal and plant life offers a different perspective and makes Lake Ilsesee popular with divers. There is a diving centre on the eastern shore. If you plan to dive, check the operator’s latest information in advance.
History in the Landscape and Along the Paths
Two steles in the townscape of Königsbrunn mark the history trail about the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. The Via Claudia Augusta also shapes the landscape: its dead-straight, visible above-ground embankment stretches for eleven kilometres between Königsbrunn-Neuhaus and Untermeitingen. It is one of the longest remaining continuous and relatively well-preserved sections of road.
The Schaffner-Bruck once again gives pedestrians and cyclists a way to cross the Lochbach towards Lake Mandichosee. This adds another dimension to a visit: alongside museums and natural areas, paths and traces of history in the landscape are also themes you can use to shape your trip.
More Experiences in the Wider Augsburg Travel Destination
The wider Augsburg travel destination also offers nature and cultural experiences with their own distinctive appeal. The LandArt Bonstetten art trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular route, where artist Hama Lohrmann explains his sculptures in person. The district of Augsburg also has an extensive, well-developed network of cycle paths.
Whether you want to focus your trip on museums, heathland paths or the lake, these different themes can help guide you in choosing accommodation in Königsbrunn.
