Wehringen lies on the Singold, near the Wertach and at the edge of Augsburg-Western Forests Nature Park. Bodies of water, green spaces and a rich local history offer different ways to shape your stay: walking paths and riverside areas lead into nature, while churches, chapels and historical traditions offer other points of interest.

Green Spaces, Paths and Water

The Pfarrgarten Generations Park is a green space of just under 3,000 square metres in the town centre, right by the Singold. Seating, outdoor fitness equipment and facilities for boules, chess and table tennis bring a range of activities together in one place. Visitors are welcome to help themselves to herbs from the herb garden. In the west of Wehringen, at the edge of the western forests, you’ll find the water-treading facility and the barefoot path right beside it. The site can be reached via a paved farm track and is accessible only on foot or by bicycle. Check the current access rules before your visit.

The “Bildungsbrücke” (Education Bridge) is located on a walking path along the Singold. Set among fields and meadows, it offers a chance to experience nature by the stream. Two gently sloping riverbank areas on the Wertach invite visitors to linger and also form ecologically valuable shallow-water habitats. The landscapes offer contrasting impressions: the Singold with its park and walking path, and the riverbank areas along the Wertach.

Churches and Chapels from Different Eras

St. George’s Parish Church brings together several building phases. Its choir dates from the Gothic period, in the 14th or 15th century. Between 1741 and 1747, the interior was redesigned with ceiling frescoes, stucco and a high altar. The church is surrounded by the wall of the former fortified cemetery, with loopholes, buttresses and two gates. A niche in the wall containing a figure dates from the 16th century.

The Catholic chapels also feature a variety of architectural forms. The Holy Cross Chapel is a rectangular building with a three-sided apse and a roof turret topped by an onion dome. It was built around 1700 and enlarged in 1751. By contrast, the Catholic St. Anthony’s Crypt Chapel is a rotunda with a domed roof in the post-Art Nouveau style, created in 1918/20 by Heinrich Düll and Georg Petzold. Together, these architectural forms and dates bring several chapters of local history to life.

Traces of the Past and Living Traditions

Around 85 mining pits from an early to high medieval ore-mining area can be found in the Wehringen high forest. The “Leitenbad” is also part of the town’s history: Wehringen had the spa from around 1490 until the 17th century. In spa literature of the 16th and 17th centuries, it was considered an important therapeutic spa; its decline is thought to have taken place in the 17th century. The Wehringen pilgrimage to the Holy Mountain at Andechs dates back to a vow made during the plague of 1717.

The Historical Wehringen Village Festival was first held in 1990 to mark the municipality’s 1,000th anniversary, and takes place every five years. The festival features craft and artistic demonstrations, as well as numerous stalls offering food and drink. Individual event dates vary, so if the festival is relevant to your trip, check the date when planning.
