Bad Rodach: Water, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Bad Rodach
Bad Rodach offers different ways to enjoy water, outdoor activities and history. ThermeNatur and the outdoor pool each have their own appeal, while the spa park and cycling loops invite you to spend time outdoors. There is also a local history museum in the Jagdschloss – Haus des Gastes and the Henneberger Warte with its panoramic views. If you are looking for accommodation, first consider what you want your stay to focus on: time at the pools, routes through the countryside or discoveries about the town’s history.
Water, walks and cycling loops
ThermeNatur in Bad Rodach has two indoor pools, a therapy pool and three outdoor pools with mineral water. Facilities also include a sauna area and aqua fitness classes. If you want to plan around a particular activity, check the operator’s latest program information.
The outdoor pool has a 50-meter-long pool, a designated non-swimmer area, a toddler area with a slide, and a playground. It is open seasonally, and opening dates vary. If you are planning a visit, check the dates for your travel period.
The spa park on the thermal hill covers just under 12 hectares and is crisscrossed by several walking paths. For a longer bike ride, there are two cycling loops of different lengths: the 12-kilometer route goes via Gauerstadt and back to Bad Rodach. The 14-kilometer loop runs from Bad Rodach to Oettingshausen and back. The places and distances given provide a specific comparison for planning your day; check local conditions for each route before cycling.
Local history and views
The local history museum is on the upper floor of the Jagdschloss – Haus des Gastes and features collections on the town’s history and local economy. Its history dates back to 1905, when it was founded with the support of Rodach residents under the direction of municipal treasurer Ferdinand Berner. The museum recalls defining moments in the town’s history, connecting its collections with the development of the town.
The Henneberger Warte offers a different perspective. The 30-meter-high observation tower has stood on the 403-meter-high Georgenberg since 1987. From there, panoramic views stretch from the Rhön in the northwest, across the Thuringian Forest and the Coburg region, to the Fränkische Leuchte, the Veste Heldburg. Together with the local history museum, this viewpoint offers two different ways to experience Bad Rodach: taking in the surrounding landscape and exploring the town’s history.
More options in the wider Coburg destination
The wider Coburg destination offers other distinct places to visit for culture and outdoor activities. The Museum of German Toy Industry in Neustadt bei Coburg traces the history of the German toy industry, from home-based work to factory production. Its international collection of traditional costume dolls includes around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries; hands-on activities and a museum trail round out the visit.
In Ahorn stands the baroque Alte Schäferei, built in 1713. Exhibits include tools from agricultural and craft trades, painted furniture and other artifacts from the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Also in Ahorn is the seven-kilometer Panoramaweg. It is listed as taking 1.5 to 2 hours to walk and as suitable for strollers.
In Seßlach, the old town is defined by its completely preserved town wall, defensive towers and three gates. From April to September, guided tours of the old town take place there every Sunday at 2 p.m.; no registration is required. The different options—a museum, a walk or a guided town tour—can help you add to your excursion plans in the wider Coburg destination, while keeping them distinct from the sights in Bad Rodach.
