Discover Coburg: Toy-making history, historic sites and trails
Accommodation in Coburg
The Coburg region offers cultural history in a wide variety of forms: in Neustadt bei Coburg, a museum traces the story from home-based work to factory production; in Ahorn, a Baroque estate sheep farm dating from 1713 stands, while Seßlach has preserved its old town wall with defensive towers and gates. There are also trails by the water and destinations in the countryside. When planning your trip, it therefore makes sense to start by choosing a focus: collections and architectural history, outdoor activities, or a mix of both.
Toys and historic everyday life
The German Toy Industry Museum in Neustadt bei Coburg traces the history of the German toy industry from home-based work to factory production. One distinctive feature is its international collection of traditional costume dolls, comprising around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries. The collection’s size and international scope offer a different perspective from the history of toy-making. Hands-on activities and a museum quiz add further things to do alongside viewing the exhibits.
In Ahorn, the Old Sheep Farm brings together architectural and everyday history. The estate sheep farm, built in 1713, is Baroque in style. It displays equipment from farming and crafts, painted furniture, and other objects documenting the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Historic architecture and objects from everyday life in the past are presented side by side. If you are interested in collections, this offers a different perspective from the Toy Museum: the focus is not on toys and their production, but on farming and craft heritage.
Old towns, guided tours and field monuments
The old town of Seßlach is enclosed by a fully preserved town wall with defensive towers and three gates. This intact wall system is a defining feature of the townscape. From April to September, guided tours of the old town take place every Sunday at 2 p.m.; no booking is required. If you plan to include a tour as a fixed part of your itinerary, check the date before your visit.
Another way to explore the area is the Marterl Trail around Seßlach. On a walk along the trail, you can learn about field monuments, their history and their religious significance. It is a way to add a themed route to your stay in Seßlach, focusing on monuments beyond the old town.
Trails, water and views
Froschgrundsee in Rödental is a reservoir. Cycling and hiking trails lead to and around it, and a nature reserve borders the lake. If you enjoy spending the day outdoors, you can choose between cycling and hiking here. Another clearly described route is the Panorama Trail in Ahorn: it is 7 kilometres long, takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and is suitable for pushchairs. Its length, stated duration and pushchair suitability help you plan this trail into your day.
Other destinations offer different highlights: Rosenau Palace in Rödental was the birthplace of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. You can climb the Henneberger Warte observation tower free of charge for views over the Rodach valley. A nature trail passes by Lauterburg. This lets you choose between historic sites, a viewpoint and a nature-focused trail based on what interests you most.
Choose accommodation to suit your planned experiences
When looking for accommodation, it is worth first deciding which places and activities will shape your stay: collections in Neustadt bei Coburg, the Old Sheep Farm and Panorama Trail in Ahorn, the old town and Marterl Trail in Seßlach, or the trails around Froschgrundsee in Rödental. If you plan to visit several places, compare the connections that suit your own itinerary. There is specific public transport information for WildPark Schloss Tambach: bus route 8301 serves the park, and it is only a short walk from the “Tambach, Weitramsdorf” stop. Check the timetable before setting off.
