Discover Rödelsee: wine, trails and history
Accommodation in Rödelsee
Rödelsee offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: wine and hiking, Franconian architecture, and the history of the Jewish cemetery. The digital wayside shrine trail “Wine and Truth” brings these themes together on a route of around three kilometres with nine stops. There is also a signposted hiking trail and places to visit nearby.
Wine and Trails Around Rödelsee
The digital wayside shrine trail “Wine and Truth” explores the special features of wine and religion in and around Rödelsee. Its nine stops and approximate length of three kilometres offer practical guidance for planning your day. Another signposted hiking option is the Rödelsee Dream Loop. The nearby area is also suitable for walks and hikes: on the 474-metre-high Schwanberg, woodland and vine-covered slopes invite you to explore.
The wine-growing areas also tell the story of the conditions in which wine is grown. In “Küchenmeister” and “Schwanleite,” a special microclimate provides particularly favourable conditions for the grapes. “terroir f Silvaner” can be reserved through the municipality for wine tastings. The Vinfothek at Schloss Crailsheim combines a tourist information office with a wine shop, offering further guidance for exploring wine and the town.
Jewish History and Franconian Architecture
The Rödelsee Jewish District Cemetery was first mentioned in 1432. Jews from more than 20 communities were buried there up until 1942. The cemetery covers just under 19,000 square metres and, with 5,500 graves in the past, is one of the largest preserved Jewish cemeteries in Germany. Around 2,500 gravestones remain; their inscriptions can provide information about the people buried there. An important point to bear in mind when planning your visit: the cemetery may not be entered on Saturdays due to the Jewish Sabbath, and no guided tours are available that day.
Schloss Crailsheim offers another glimpse into the town’s history. Built in 1614 with a scroll gable, it thereafter served as the residence of the Rödelsee branch of the Crailsheim family. The Elfleinshäusla also reflects Franconian architectural and social history: this faithfully restored home, business premises and vintner’s house features a forge as a central element.
For groups of up to 20 people, a museum tour and, where available, a blacksmithing demonstration at the Elfleinshäusla are possible by prior arrangement. Opening hours are seasonal: from May to October, the house is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 2 pm to 6 pm; visits can also be arranged by appointment. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Plan for Events and Travel
If you would like to combine your stay with a festival, make a note of the Rödelsee Wine Festival. It is regularly held on the first weekend in July; check the exact festival dates before you travel. For rail travel, the nearest station is in Iphofen, about three kilometres from Rödelsee. If you are planning to travel by train, include current connections in your travel plans.
The places mentioned offer different highlights: the wayside shrine trail brings together wine and religion, the cemetery offers a window into Jewish history, and Schloss Crailsheim and the Elfleinshäusla represent architectural and local history.
