Iphofen combines a historic town center with wine country whose history and trails can be explored in different ways. Winding lanes, town houses from centuries past and magnificent churches shape the town. At the same time, its attractions range from medieval viticulture to views across the vineyards. You can tailor your stay to a wide range of interests, from local history and art to winegrowing and circular walking routes.

Old Town, Fortifications and Art

Iphofen’s fortifications are fully preserved. The town wall includes towers and gates, among them the well-known Rödelseer Gate. Together with the winding lanes and historic town houses, they give a vivid picture of the town center, complemented by its churches. St. Vitus Parish Church houses a figure of John the Evangelist by Riemenschneider.

Behind the town hall, the Iphöfer Geschichte(n) exhibition in the Geschichtsscheune offers several ways to explore the town’s history: a talking town model, zoom-in displays and a lapidarium featuring Iphofen stone sculptures. The Knauf Museum focuses on replicas of important museum pieces from around the world; its collection includes more than 200 pieces. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum hosts exclusive special exhibitions every year. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the historic old town with different ways of exploring art and history.

The architectural history of the Knauf Museum is also part of this cultural picture. In the 1960s, gypsum manufacturer and art patron Dr. Alfons N. Knauf began converting a magnificent Iphofen Baroque building dating from 1688 into a private museum. This links a specific site in Iphofen’s architectural history with the museum’s present-day displays of replicas and exhibitions.

Winegrowing History and Views

The Iphofen historic vineyard illustrates important periods in Franconian winegrowing, from the late Middle Ages to the 1960s. The terroir f viewpoint in the Julius-Echter-Berg wine-growing area offers a different perspective on the wine country: from there, you can see across Iphofen and its vineyards. Along the Kronsberg wine-growing area, the grape variety educational trail explains important classic Franconian varieties. Each attraction has a different focus: historical development, views or the grape varieties themselves.

The circular walking routes also vary in length and course. Marked i 2, the Kronsberg Trail runs for about 7 kilometers through Iphofen’s Kronsberg wine-growing area. The approximately 13-kilometer N1 circular trail runs around Iphofen’s Nenzenheim district and passes natural beauty spots. Enjoy lovely views at Wolfsee, from Andreas-Därr Tower and at the “Am Stöckig” site; the starting and finishing point is the Nenzenheim sports ground. Comparing the distances gives you a practical guide for planning, without specifying a walking time. Check current trail conditions locally.
