In Farchant, impressive natural attractions meet trails with their own themes and a rich cultural heritage. The Kuhflucht Waterfalls, the forest nature trail and St. Andreas Parish Church each give your stay a different focus. When planning your trip, consider whether you mainly want to experience water and forest, discover places of cultural and historical interest, or learn about local traditions.

Waterfalls and Forest in Kuhflucht Nature and Recreation Park

The Kuhflucht Waterfalls comprise three cascades with a total drop of around 270 metres. The Königsweg trail leads to the waterfalls and was renovated in 2023. Several viewing platforms offer views of the watercourse of the Kuhfluchtgraben stream. Here, the waterfalls and stream are the natural highlights.

The forest nature trail is also part of Kuhflucht Nature and Recreation Park. Information stations explore the subject of forests, complemented by interactive activities including a balancing tree, forest school, jumping pit and tree telephone. The two attractions have different focuses: the forest nature trail is about learning about forests and taking part in activities at the stations, while the Königsweg trail leads to the waterfalls and offers views of the watercourse. So if you want to get to know Farchant through its natural attractions, there is more to discover than a single scenic highlight.

Church, Stations of the Cross and Local Traditions

St. Andreas Parish Church was built in 1728/29 by Johann Mayr, a Baroque master builder from Munich. Its high altar dates from 1779. The two dates refer to different parts of the church: its construction and its later furnishings. St. Andreas thus offers a tangible introduction to Baroque church art in Farchant.

Another route through the village is the Healing Stations of the Cross, with 15 stations. The first is at Spielleiten playground; from there, the route runs along the edge of the forest to Burgrain. Each station has an image panel and a supplementary text panel. Unlike a destination such as the waterfalls, the route itself is one of the important points of orientation here.

At Farchant’s forest festivals, traditional brass band music, Schuhplattler dancing, finger wrestling and Goaßlschnalzen (whip cracking) are part of the living traditions. Dates vary, so check the event schedule in advance if a forest festival fits your trip. Another way to explore the village playfully is the treasure hunt: a flyer designed like a small treasure map points out various places in Farchant where you can solve puzzles. This offers a different way to explore than a trail with set stations or a viewpoint.

More Nature and Culture in the Wider Destination

The wider destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen has its own natural and cultural attractions. Visitors can walk between massive rock walls through the Partnach Gorge and experience the water rushing below them. The gorge was declared a natural monument and opened to visitors in 1912. If you would rather focus on mountain hikes, you can also visit the 1,780-metre-high Wank, Partenkirchen’s local mountain, which is ideal for leisurely hikes with far-reaching views.

Culture enthusiasts will also find points of interest in the wider destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen: the Richard Strauss Institute is located in the historic Villa Christina in Partenkirchen’s spa gardens and houses a permanent exhibition about Strauss’s life and work. You can weigh Farchant’s own attractions separately from those in the wider destination when planning your trip. This way, you can choose your accommodation based on the experiences that matter most to your stay.
