Haiming combines local history with cycling: a castle above the castle pond, information boards about old house names and routes that include the village offer different perspectives. The Three Lakes Tour also passes through Niedergottsau. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether historic buildings and stories about the houses or cycling should be the main focus.

Local history at the castle, chapel and houses

Count Sigmund von Berchem, the lord of the manor at the time, had the new Haiming Castle built above the castle pond between 1838 and 1840. The construction dates and the name of its patron give the castle a specific place in Haiming’s history. St. Anthony’s Chapel was dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June 1902. Its dated dedication adds a religious landmark to the story of Haiming.

The Niedergern History Trail uses information boards on public and private buildings in the Haiming area. They provide information about old house names and the history of the respective farms or houses. Alongside the castle and chapel, the trail also offers a glimpse into the stories behind individual properties and their names.

In the municipality of Haiming, in Niedergottsau, the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1443 and substantially expanded and redesigned in 1760. The construction phases can be distinguished by date: the original building in the 15th century was followed by a major expansion and redesign in the 18th century. Niedergottsau thus adds its own point of reference in church history.

Cycling routes through Haiming

The Inn-Salzach Cycle Route runs through Haiming; the Three Lakes Tour passes through Haiming and Niedergottsau. When choosing a route, you can therefore decide whether you would also like it to include Niedergottsau. The two routes offer a practical way to explore Haiming by bike without losing sight of its local history.

Landscapes in the Altötting district

The wider Altötting travel destination includes the district along the Inn and Salzach rivers. The landscape there is shaped by a plain about ten kilometres wide: the Inn flows through it, while lush green hills border it to the north and south. This broader regional landscape adds a regional perspective to Haiming’s local history and route themes.

Another nature highlight in the wider Altötting travel destination is the internationally significant wetland and nature reserve “Lower Inn between Haiming and Neuhaus”. It provides a habitat for migrating, overwintering and breeding marsh and water birds. More than 25 different bird species dependent on aquatic and wetland habitats breed there.

The wider Altötting travel destination also includes the Dachlwand nature reserve on the Inn, northwest of Marktl. It covers parts of the municipalities of Marktl, Erlbach and Perach, spans about 206 hectares and was designated a nature reserve in 1986, having previously been a landscape conservation area. These different protected landscapes provide regional points of interest alongside Haiming’s local history.
