The Altötting district lies along the Inn and Salzach rivers. Its landscape is shaped by a plain about ten kilometres wide, through which the Inn flows; lush green hills rise to the north and south. River scenery, open plains and rolling hills thus come together within a compact region. Together with the Mühldorf district, Altötting is part of the Inn-Salzach tourism region. Topics that help visitors find their way around include cycling and pilgrimage routes, museums and swimming lakes.

River Landscapes and Protected Nature

Dachlwand on the Inn lies northwest of Marktl. The nature reserve covers about 206 hectares across parts of Marktl, Erlbach and Perach, and was redesignated from a landscape protection area to a nature reserve in 1986. Another natural area is the internationally important wetland and nature reserve “Lower Inn between Haiming and Neuhaus”. It provides a habitat for migrating, overwintering and breeding marsh and water birds. More than 25 different bird species associated with aquatic and wetland habitats breed there. The area’s different functions make the seasons visible: it is important not only during the breeding season, but also for migrating and overwintering birds.

Routes for Different Itineraries

In Altöttinger Gries, the nature trail runs along a stream and features ten different interactive stations. A circular trail of approximately 1.4 kilometres is also located in the Gries. For a longer hike, try the Georg-Brenner hiking trail: this permanently signposted route is ten kilometres long and leads south from Altötting to the district of Unterschlottham.

There is also a regional route to help you plan a cycling stage. A popular variant of the Inn Cycle Path runs from Neuötting through Altötting and the extensive Ötting Forest to the historic town of Burghausen. It also passes the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers on its way to Marktl; the section in the Inn-Salzach region is just over 75 kilometres long. Check for current diversions before setting off. The Way of St. James crosses Altötting from north to south, adding a pilgrimage route to the cycling and hiking trails.

Churches, Art Treasures and Museums

St. Anna Basilica is the largest church in Altötting and can accommodate more than 8,000 people. The octagonal structure of the Chapel of Grace was probably built around the year 700; it is believed to be Germany’s oldest centrally planned building. The treasury also offers a special connection to history: the Golden Horse was made in 1404 in the court workshops of Paris.

At the Brother Konrad Museum, you can visit the Old Gate and Brother Konrad’s death cell. The Brother Konrad meeting rooms are open to visitors free of charge. The Incense Museum offers a different perspective on a craft: it shows the skill involved in making incense and shares interesting facts about the process. In Burghausen, the castle adds another architectural highlight. It is 1,051 metres long and has six courtyards.

Experiences to Help You Choose Accommodation

These highlights offer a practical starting point for planning, without requiring every activity to take the same amount of time. If you would like to include a day of swimming, Peracher Badeesee is one of the swimming lakes in the Altötting district. Check the facilities and local conditions before your visit.
