Tutzing: Culture, Hiking and Water Sports
Accommodation in Tutzing
In Tutzing, marked hiking trails, cultural events and activities on the water come together. Trails lead through the town, water sports courses and rentals are available at Nordbad, and the cultural scene ranges from the Tutzing Brahms Days to a summer program aboard a historic passenger ship. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether exercise, cultural events or time on the water should set the pace of your trip. The scenery and variety of activities offer practical guidance.
Scenery and trails in and around Tutzing
The Schloss Tutzing castle park lies on the shore of Lake Starnberg. Its expansive grounds and centuries-old trees define the park, which is considered a unique natural monument. The lakeside park landscape offers a distinct contrast to the hiking trails that lead through the town.
Two different scales are available for hiking: Tutzing is the starting point of a hiking trail network totaling 230 kilometers. In addition, marked local trails lead through the town and are between 5 and 15 kilometers long. The network describes the overall extent, while the distances for the local trails provide more specific guidance for planning a day out.
Nearby, south of Tutzing, lies the 728-meter-high Ilkahöhe. From there, the view stretches across Lake Starnberg and the foothills of the Alps, with the Chiemgau Alps, as far as the Zugspitze. This named hill and its sweeping views are among the experiences associated with Tutzing.
Culture in a range of formats
The Tutzing Brahms Days are a recurring cultural event. This classical music festival has been held annually since 1997, with five concert dates in October. If you would like to plan your trip around a concert, check that year’s program.
The Evangelische Akademie Tutzing hosts conferences, panel discussions, concerts, readings and lectures. According to the academy, its events are open to everyone; individual events may vary in format. The Kulturtheater Tutzing regularly hosts theater performances, concerts, readings, film screenings and other cultural events.
A unique venue is the former passenger ship Tutzing. The Museumsschiff-Verein Tutzing e.V. restores and maintains it as a technical monument; during the summer months, the association offers a cultural program on board featuring concerts and cabaret evenings. If you have a particular concert, theater performance or reading in mind, it is worth checking the relevant dates.
Water sports and time by the lake
Nordbad offers windsurfing courses for beginners and advanced participants of all ages. The surf and sailing center at Nordbad offers catamaran courses for all skill levels. If you don’t own windsurfing equipment, you can use the surf rental service. Sailing boats can also be rented at Nordbad; availability may vary by season.
Nordbad has a sunbathing lawn for swimming and sunbathing. The bathing area at Südbad is supervised by the German Red Cross (DRK) to ensure safe swimming; this supervision may vary by season. Check the latest information if you plan to visit the supervised bathing area. Tutzinger Segelschule Müller also offers courses that prepare participants to take the sailing license or motorboat license exam.
Boat trips and planning
The steamer landing stage in Tutzing offers the option of taking a round trip on Lake Starnberg to the south or north. The extended pier also allows passengers to change boats at the landing stage. Routes and timetables may vary; check the current timetable before including a round trip in your day’s plans.
More experiences in the wider Starnberg destination
In the wider Starnberg destination, the Bismarck Tower near Assenhausen was inaugurated on July 1, 1899. The listed Feldafing lido is still largely in its original 1927 condition; its operation may vary by season. A specific bathing restriction applies at Bucentaurpark in Starnberg: swimming and bathing in Lake Starnberg are prohibited there by order of the lake shipping authority because of the shipyard harbor immediately next door. Check this rule again before your visit.
