Dammbach: Forest Trails, Culture and Traditions
Accommodation in Dammbach
Dammbach lies in the Dammbach Valley, where oak and beech forests provide welcome coolness even on hot summer days. The trails pass through a landscape that also bears traces of former farming, viticulture and forestry. There are also cultural monuments, places for shared activities and recurring local traditions. You can shape your stay around a variety of interests: with hikes, insights into the history of the landscape or experiences centred on the community.
Cultural Trail between Scharstein and Geishöhe
The European Cultural Trail “Between Scharstein and Geishöhe” explores the cultural landscape of Dammbach between Scharstein in the north and Geishöhe in the south of the Dammbach Valley. Starting from Sternplatz, you can walk the trail in two loops, each 9 km long. The northern loop leads to Pollershöhe. There, dry-stone walls and stone platforms bear witness to former farming and viticulture—landscape features that reveal the history of how the valley was used.
Scharstein is also on the northern loop. The wayside shrine dates from 1586 and commemorates a drama of jealousy. In this way, the cultural trail connects landscape and history at specific places. If you would rather experience culture through a single building than a longer hike, you can visit the listed parish church of St. Valentine in the district of Wintersbach.
Forest Trails and a Variety of Hiking Routes
The well-maintained, signposted network of hiking trails in the Dammbach Valley runs through extensive forests. The accessible “Near and Far” circular trail at Oberschnorrhof offers another way to discover the landscape and its history together. It opens up views of the Spessart forests around Dammbach and brings the history of settlement and traces of former farming and forestry to life.
If you are looking for an uphill route, consider the 3.5 km “Old School Path” adventure and Passion trail, which climbs to Geishöhe. The third stage of the Spessart Trail 2 covers a longer distance: it runs for about 20 km from Dammbach via the scenic Old School Path to Geishöhe. Four popular hiking trails meet at Ludwig-Keller Tower. The tower stands at the highest point of the 521 m-high Geishöhe mountain in Oberwintersbach, which belongs to the municipality of Dammbach. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in character: from the accessible circuit to the uphill climb and the long-distance stage.
Enjoy Time Together in Taubendelle
In Taubendelle, a multi-generational playground, climbing castle and bike course form a meeting place for all generations. At the bike course, visitors young and old can practise their skills on two wheels. The three attractions offer different activities: playing, climbing and cycling are all part of this shared recreational space.
Church, Passion Plays and Local Traditions
The events calendar is also shaped by recurring traditions. Every two years, Dammbach hosts the Güldner gathering, organised by the “Dammbachklänge” music association; it attracts numerous visitors from beyond the state border. Every five years, more than 200 participants perform the Christian drama about the suffering and death of Jesus of Nazareth in the Passion Plays. Each summer, a pilgrimage on foot also sets out from Krausenbach to Walldürn. These events and the listed parish church of St. Valentine show different sides of cultural life in the municipality: community events, religious tradition and a historic building in the district of Wintersbach.
