Heimbuchenthal: Cultural Trail, Elsava and Spessart Nature Park
Accommodation in Heimbuchenthal
Heimbuchenthal lies in the upper Elsava Valley, in the heart of the Spessart Nature Park. The European Cultural Trail “Between Heaven & Hell,” the Elsava and the Kurparksee lend the town distinct character: historical sites, a river valley and a lake that forms part of the local landscape. The Cultural Trail starts at the old railway station and leads to other historic places and traces of the past. There are also various ways to spend time outdoors around Heimbuchenthal. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether cultural history, physical activity or a combination of the two will shape your stay.
Cultural Trail and Industrial History
The two described loops of the European Cultural Trail can be compared by length. The 5 km loop runs from St. Martin’s Church to the “Lady of the Mountains” chapel; the loop that is one kilometre longer runs from the old railway station to Höllhammer and Heimathenhof. They therefore differ not only in length but also in the destinations they include. The meadow path between the two endpoints of the Cultural Trail is 1.5 km long, offering a shorter route. The route also passes Kernsmühle. Along the way, visitors can see reconstructed historical irrigation systems.
Höllhammer links the trail to the history of a historic industrial monument. It is associated with a self-sufficient ironworks village that was established in the 18th century under the direction of the Rexroth family. The various stops thus bring both specific route points and the history of the ironworks village into view. Those interested in cultural history will find more than a choice of routes of different lengths: the chapel, St. Martin’s Church, Kernsmühle and Höllhammer each offer their own thematic focus.
The Elsava, Kurparksee and Walking Routes
A footpath and cycle path runs along the Elsava in Heimbuchenthal. There are three Nordic walking trails around the town, and designated mountain bike trails can also be explored there. The range of sports and leisure activities also includes the Spessartweg 1 and Spessartweg 2. Their locations differ: the footpath and cycle path follow the Elsava, while the Nordic walking trails and mountain bike trails are around Heimbuchenthal. There is a barefoot trail by Kurparksee, which forms part of the local landscape. This brings together paths along the river, trails in the surrounding area and an activity by the lake.
Nature observation is also connected with the Elsava. Increased beaver activity has been observed in recent years along the river between Leitwiese in Mespelbrunn and Millionenweg in Heimbuchenthal. These observations relate to the section mentioned; they complement the cultural and walking routes with another way of experiencing the river landscape.
Information for Motorhome Travellers
The motorhome parking area in Heimbuchenthal is right beside the Elsava. The “Pedalwelt” interactive exhibition, with its fun course and soccer pitch, is nearby. A miniature golf course and an adventure golf course are both easily reached on foot from the parking area. Motorhome travellers therefore have a specific combination of riverside location and named leisure attractions near the site. This information offers a useful reference point if you want to plan your trip around the Elsava and the activities mentioned there.
