Two cycling routes run through Urspringen, and the church and synagogue offer different perspectives on history. This lets you shape your trip around active routes and cultural history.

Cycling on Two Distinct Routes

The approximately 43-kilometre cycle tour Lohr–Marktheidenfeld–Urspringen–Lohr passes through Zimmern, Roden, Urspringen, Ansbach and Waldzell, among other places. It is flat in the Main valley; after Roden, there are climbs. The tour therefore alternates between flat sections in the valley and uphill stretches.

The “Blick über den Spessart” cycling route follows paved agricultural roads through Urspringen to Birkenfeld. The two routes differ in the features described: one is characterised by its approximate length and the change from the flat Main valley to climbs, while the other is defined by its road surface and route to Birkenfeld. It is worth checking local route information before setting off.

The Church and Synagogue as Historic Sites

The church in Urspringen was consecrated on 4 June 1856 by WĂĽrzburg Bishop Georg Anton von Stahl in honour of the Virgin Mary. Mary is the patron saint of the church and the village. The consecration explicitly links the history of the church building with its local patron saint.

Built in 1803, the Urspringen synagogue now serves as a memorial site and permanent exhibition, “Genisa – Jewish Life in the Countryside.” It commemorates the Jewish communities of Main-Spessart district and the citizens who were deported and murdered there; it also offers an introduction to Jewish culture. Remembrance and cultural learning are the focus of this historic site. Visiting opportunities vary by season; check visitor information in advance.

More to Explore in the Wider Main-Spessart Destination

In the wider Main-Spessart destination, vineyards, water and woodland come together in an appealing holiday region. The Main Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometres long; just under 100 kilometres of it run through Main-Spessart district, linking Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. The Spessart Trails carry the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality seal. In Spessart Nature Park, hiking options range from short walks to multi-day hikes—from a brief spell outdoors to a multi-day tour.

The cycling network in the wider Main-Spessart destination also offers a broader regional setting: it is shaped by long-distance cycling routes in Lower Franconia in the Main and Wern valleys and along the Sinn and Franconian Saale rivers. The Main Cycle Route, Saale Cycle Route and Sinn Cycle Route pass through GemĂĽnden a.Main. These regional routes form a separate topic alongside the two cycling routes through Urspringen.

Other cultural attractions in the wider Main-Spessart destination include the historic fortified church of Aschfeld, a refuge and defensive complex dating from the 15th century. Parts of the fortifications are now used as museum rooms, displaying historic defensive weapons and collections on rural life and work, including “Die gute alte Zeit zum Anfassen” (“The Good Old Days You Can Touch”). The Homburg Paper Mill Museum preserves production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, the paper-making family’s living quarters and a demonstration workshop. A fifth-generation hand papermaking workshop still produces fine handmade paper there today.
