Waldaschaff: Water, Forest and History
Accommodation in Waldaschaff
Discover Waldaschaff through three specific themes: water to explore, outdoor activities and traces of history. At the water experience trail and other waterside spots, the focus is on experimenting; in the deciduous forest, marked hiking trails lead the way, while Wahlmich and the Triftdamm evoke different periods in the town’s history.
Water, Forest and Outdoor Activities
The Waldaschaff water experience trail has a water pump and small basins for damming water. Together with Kauppensee and the Aschaff, it invites visitors to experiment with water. If you enjoy trying things out for yourself on an outing, this offers a different focus from hiking trails or historic sites. The “Am Knückel” recreation area offers another way to get active with its beach volleyball court: It is accessible at all times and welcomes people of all ages to play.
The Spessart 1, Spessart 2 and KurfĂĽrstenweg quality hiking trails lead through the deciduous forest near Waldaschaff. There are also several Nordic walking circuits connected to routes in neighboring communities. Alongside the water-based activities, these offer various ways to explore the surroundings on foot. The Archaeological Spessart Project currently reports several trails in the Waldaschaff area closed following a forest fire. Check the latest conditions before setting out. The Waldaschaff cultural trail leads to the Burg Wahlmich station, but it is currently reported as impassable following a forest fire.
Historic Sites Around Waldaschaff
The archaeological site “Wahlmich,” also known as Weilerburg, was probably built in the 13th century. The Triftdamm in the Autenbach valley has a documented date range: it was built between 1733 and 1750 by the forestry administration of the Electorate of Mainz. As well as nature and water experiences, Waldaschaff offers a glimpse of archaeological remains and historic architecture.
The Waldaschaff cultural trail leads to the Burg Wahlmich station. Given the currently reported impassable conditions, take this route information into account when planning and check the latest conditions before setting out. The historic sites here represent two different periods: Wahlmich’s presumed origins in the 13th century and the specifically dated construction of the Triftdamm in the 18th century.
Main-Spessart: A Broader Perspective
Across the wider destination of Main-Spessart, vineyards, water and forest together shape the holiday region. The scale of hiking can also expand considerably here: the Main Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometers long. Just under 100 kilometers of it run through the Main-Spessart district, linking Karlstadt, GemĂĽnden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. This regional route offers a broader hiking perspective alongside the trails that lead through the forest near Waldaschaff.
Towns across the wider Main-Spessart region offer additional, distinct themes in culture and craftsmanship. Karlstadt’s old town, surrounded by walls, towers and gates, preserves buildings and urban structures that have stood for more than seven centuries; the town was founded around 1200. The Museum Papiermühle Homburg offers a different insight: production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, the paper-making family’s living quarters and a demonstration workshop have all been authentically preserved in their entirety. In addition, a hand paper mill still produces fine handmade paper today, now in its fifth generation. The region’s attractions thus range from historic urban landscapes to living craftsmanship.
