Anzing combines a flat landscape with a striking pilgrimage church and a historic building on Hirnerstraße. The municipality comprises 18 districts and lies east of an old moraine ridge running from south to north, on the northwestern edge of the Ebersberg Forest. This offers several points of interest for planning your trip: the church’s history and design, the development of the Old Post Office building, and a rural landscape.

Pilgrimage and stucco in the Church of the Nativity of Mary

Today’s parish and pilgrimage church of the Nativity of Mary in Anzing was built between 1677 and 1681 at the request of the Scapular Brotherhood. It remains a pilgrimage destination, with the miraculous image on the high altar as its focal point. Its pilgrimage history is linked to a specific period of construction and enduring religious significance.

The interior design also makes a distinctive impression: the nave and choir are characterised by Zwergers’ predominantly geometric, linear stucco decoration. The pilgrimage tradition and the stucco’s distinctive style are two different aspects of the church. Those interested in sacred art and local history will find more here than a single construction date: the church remains a pilgrimage destination, while its construction dates to the late 17th century.

Building history on Hirnerstraße

The Alte Post inn at Hirnerstraße 2 is a former post station and a two-storey, plastered gabled building. Two bay windows, a Baroque portal and a steep gabled roof define the building. Dendrochronological analysis dates it to 1676; it probably incorporates a core dating from the 16th century. The building was remodelled and extended in the 19th century.

The different dates bring several construction phases into focus: the dating to 1676, the possible older core, and later alterations. In comparison with the pilgrimage church, the Alte Post is best understood through its architecture and development. Anzing thus offers two different ways to explore the past side by side—the church’s religious history and the changing history of a secular building.

Landscape, playground and café

The playground and ball court on Lärchenstraße feature a long slide, a boules court and a table tennis table. Sliding, boules and table tennis each offer a different kind of activity in one place. This is a specific leisure spot in Anzing, offering a different way to spend time than a visit focused on the church or building history.

Café Oansa is on the ground floor of the municipal building, next to the Floraldikum flower shop. If you plan to stop at the café, check its opening hours in advance.

In the wider destination of Ebersberg

The wider destination of Ebersberg offers other distinct nature and culture experiences. In the Ebersberg Forest, an observation tower leads up 169 steps to views across the entire foothills of the Alps, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On exceptionally clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high can also be seen. The Forest and Environment Museum has stood right by the Ebersberg Forest since 2004 and explores the history of forest use and forest ecology.

The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre has been awarded the Bavarian quality seal “Umweltbildung.Bayern”. Its events on education for sustainable development take place mostly outdoors and in the adjoining forest; visits by school classes and other groups are possible. The Kirchseeon Perchtenlauf, held every year in the run-up to Christmas, is a seasonal cultural event. Impressive masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells shape the atmosphere of the procession in the municipality of Kirchseeon.
