Pliening combines an early connection to church history with a sporting highlight at the local sports grounds. In the wider Ebersberg travel destination, forest, environmental education, customs, history and food and drink offer further areas of interest.

Church History and Movement in Pliening

Archaeological evidence shows that the site of today’s Kreuzkirche was home to an early church as far back as 1000 AD. This historical connection therefore relates to a specific place in Pliening: the site where the Kreuzkirche stands today. Gelting offers another cultural facet. Since August 2025, the Pliening Local History Association (Heimatverein Pliening e. V.) has had exhibition space in the museum room at the Old School there. The municipality thus brings together an early church site and a more recent opportunity for association exhibitions.

A skate park at the sports grounds in Pliening was officially opened. The streetball court is located right next to one of the park’s obstacles. This means two different sports are available side by side: features for skating and an area for streetball. If you would like to include active pursuits in your travel plans, you will find specific options here in the town.

Forest, Views and the Environment in the Wider Ebersberg Travel Destination

In the wider Ebersberg travel destination, the observation tower in the Ebersberg Forest combines a sporting challenge with sweeping views: 169 steps lead up to the viewing platform. From there, the panorama stretches across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On exceptionally clear days, you can even make out distant peaks over 3,000 metres high. The views put the landscape centre stage, while the climb is part of the experience.

The Forest and Environment Museum has stood directly next to the Ebersberg Forest since 2004. It explores the history of forest use and forest ecology. The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre offers a different approach: it has been awarded the Bavarian “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal and runs events on education for sustainable development. These take place mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest; visits by school classes and other groups are possible. The museum and the environmental education centre thus focus on different aspects of forest history, ecology and education.

Customs, History and Food and Drink in the Wider Ebersberg Travel Destination

History and culture also take a variety of forms. In Poing, a branch of the Roman road led to Roman farmsteads, which were discovered during construction work in 2004. The Grafing City Museum offers insights into artistic and historical highlights of the surrounding area, as well as into the lives and work of people in the region around Grafing, through its temporary and permanent exhibitions. Elkofen Castle is in Unterelkofen, two kilometres south of Grafing town centre. The castle is one of the best-preserved in Upper Bavaria and is surrounded by a wide, deep moat that was once filled with water.

The annual Kirchseeon Perchtenlauf is a feature of the pre-Christmas season in the market town of Kirchseeon. Elaborately designed masks and costumes, drums and bells set the mood. Herrmannsdorfer’s annual harvest festival offers a different seasonal highlight. It features delicacies from the fire pit, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, freshly made Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer; the stables and workshops also open their doors. These customs and harvest celebrations offer very different ways to discover the traditions and culinary delights of the wider Ebersberg travel destination.

The Grafing City Museum is open Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm and Sundays from 2 to 4 pm; it is closed on public holidays. Check the opening times again before your visit.
