Discover Dorfen: Churches, Trails and Town History
Accommodation in Dorfen
Discover Dorfen through its many different facets: St. Veit Market Church connects a visit with the town’s history, while trails for cycling, exploring history and walking offer different ways to get out and about. You can put together a mix of culture and activity to suit your own interests.
Explore Dorfen on its trails
The Vilstal Cycle Path starts at Dorfen railway station. This makes the station a clear starting point if you want to include a bike ride in your travel plans. Before setting out, you can check current conditions with the relevant route authority.
The Dorfen–Oberdorfen Ecumenical Hiking Trail is 7.3 kilometres long and passes ten important sites in local history. Its length and the stops along the way provide two practical points for planning: you can gauge the distance and know that the route covers historical topics. The trail is therefore suited to visitors who want to learn about local history as they hike.
Churches and art in Dorfen
St. Veit Market Church is in the centre of Dorfen. It was built in its present form around 1390 and is the oldest church in the Dorfen parish. This makes it a clear point of interest for visitors keen on the town’s church history.
The Maria Dorfen Pilgrimage Church stands on Ruprechtsberg. Inside is an altar by the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam. This attribution draws attention to the church’s furnishings and offers a different perspective from St. Veit, whose significance stems from its age and status within the parish.
Walks on the edge of town
A recreational area with a sculpture trail lies on the southern edge of Dorfen and invites visitors to go for a walk. Alongside churches and longer routes, it offers another way to spend your time: a walk whose destination is the sculpture trail itself. The difference is clear when choosing what to do for the day: the ecumenical trail combines distance and history, while the sculpture trail offers a reason to take a walk.
A distinct cultural and historical perspective on Erding
The wider travel destination of Erding has its own cultural and historical focus: the Erding District Farmhouse Museum comprises 15 historic buildings relocated from the Erding district and presents traditional rural economic and everyday life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It offers a separate point of interest for travellers who, in addition to Dorfen’s churches and trails, are interested in rural architecture and everyday history.
In Erding, the former home and studio of Franz Xaver Stahl turns the focus to another historical subject. The Biedermeier house dates from around 1840 and is furnished with period furniture; the former studio has remained unchanged since his death. The history of the house, its furnishings and the studio each provide a distinct point of interest.
