Glonn combines art-historical details and insights into local history with opportunities for hiking. The Rococo Church of St. John the Baptist, built in 1778, and the local history museum offer different perspectives; Handy Trail 1 provides a clearly defined route for a hike. You can tailor the balance between culture and outdoor activity to your interests.

Church Art and Glonn’s Local History

As a Rococo church, St. John the Baptist is a distinctive part of Glonn’s local history. Its furnishings include altar figures and a crucifix with the “Sorrowful Mother of God” by Joseph Götsch. Götsch was a pupil of Ignaz Günther. The names and works also give the church an art-historical dimension, drawing attention to specific details rather than solely classifying the building as Rococo.

Another place to learn about Glonn’s history is the former convent school. It houses the local history museum in its attic, as well as the Klosterschule Gallery of the Cultural and Beautification Association. The museum presents numerous pictures, works of art and everyday objects from earlier times, bringing the history of this historic town to life.

The former convent school’s cultural role extends beyond exhibitions: since 1983, in addition to its annual exhibitions, it has hosted 32 other events. These included art exhibitions, lectures and commemorative exhibitions. The same building therefore offers both a collection on local history and a long series of diverse cultural events that shed light on Glonn.

The local history museum is scheduled to open on the first Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m.; it is closed in January, August and September. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Hiking Trails with Different Levels of Route Information

Handy Trail 1 is a circular route about 10 kilometers long, with an estimated duration of approximately two and a half hours. It is also suitable for families with children. Its distance and duration provide a useful guide when planning a group hike as part of your day.

The information for the “From Glonn to Unterelkofen” hiking route is different: a 10.3-kilometer section is specified. The figures are therefore not directly comparable: for Handy Trail 1, they refer to a circular route and its approximate duration; for the route to Unterelkofen, they refer to a section of the trail. Bear this difference in mind when comparing hikes.

More Things to Explore in the Wider Ebersberg Destination

Beyond Glonn, the wider Ebersberg destination offers other places of interest in their own right. In the Ebersberg Forest, an observation tower leads up 169 steps to panoramic views across the foothills of the Alps, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On exceptionally clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 meters high are also visible. Also located right by the Ebersberg Forest, the Forest and Environment Museum has been open since 2004; it focuses on the history of forest use and forest ecology.

Environmental education there also includes the Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Center, which has been awarded Bavaria’s “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal. Its education for sustainable development events are held mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest. Visits for school classes and other groups are possible. The observation tower, forest history and environmental education thus offer different perspectives on nature and human use of it.

Seasonal events also add their own highlights. In the municipality of Kirchseeon, the Perchten parade is a fixture of the run-up to Christmas and delights numerous visitors every year. Masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells shape the atmosphere. Herrmannsdorfer, a former estate east of Glonn and a model project for organic farming known beyond the region, hosts a large farm festival once a year for the harvest thanksgiving. The menu includes specialties from the fire pit, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, fresh Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer; barns and workshops also open their doors. Check the dates of these special events in advance.

Those interested in other historical topics can find them in several places in the wider Ebersberg destination.
