Discover Hohenbrunn: Forests, Trails and History
Accommodation in Hohenbrunn
Hohenbrunn lies between Munich and the Bavarian Oberland, in a clearing surrounded by a belt of protected Bannwald forest. Lakes and the mountains of the foothills of the Alps are nearby. Here, a forest landscape and regional excursion opportunities meet a municipality with its own local history—a charming setting if you want to combine nature experiences with culture and a visit to the indoor swimming pool.
Explore the Forest on the Hohenbrunn Circular Hiking Trail
The Hohenbrunn circular hiking trail follows well-marked paths through the forest, combining nature experiences, exercise and learning through play. It is designed for families and children as well as hikers and cyclists. Around 23 interactive stations share facts about the forest and invite you to take part. This makes the trail a shared discovery tour, where the focus is not just on covering a distance.
You can choose between a short loop of around 4.5 kilometres and a long loop of around 8.5 kilometres. Route lengths and the number of stations may change if the route is extended or adjusted. So check the latest trail information before setting out.
Local History and Architecture
Written records of Hohenbrunn date back to 780 and 814; 814 is considered the year the municipality was founded. The late Gothic village church of St Stephen is a visible link to the area’s older history. Its tower was topped with a Baroque onion dome in 1680. The combination of late Gothic church architecture and later tower design offers a tangible point of connection if you are interested in the area’s historical layers.
Special Places and Changing Visiting Opportunities
The MUNA site extends across Hohenbrunn and Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn. The former 180-hectare military site contains 120 above-ground bunkers. The area is normally fenced off and closed to the public; guided tours are offered on selected days. Visits are therefore limited to these tour dates. If you plan to visit the MUNA, check the dates in advance.
Riemerling indoor swimming pool opens its doors to the public. Opening periods and temporary closures may change, so it is advisable to check the latest opening times before your visit. Café O.K. offers a small selection of drinks and food for visitors to the sports campus and indoor swimming pool; its offerings and opening arrangements may also change.
Choose the Right Base
Hohenbrunn has S-Bahn and bus connections to Munich and neighbouring municipalities. Individual districts and settlements are served by specific stations: Riemerling by Ottobrunn station, Hohenbrunn Dorf and the Grasbrunner Weg settlement by Hohenbrunn station, and the Luitpoldsiedlung by Wächterhof station. Some districts are relatively remote. So if you are looking for accommodation, it is worth checking the exact address and which connection suits your planned journeys. Check current timetables and connections before travelling.
Your choice of base also depends on which aspects of Hohenbrunn you want to discover: the forest and circular hiking trail make for an active stay, St Stephen’s offers a historical highlight, while the indoor swimming pool and café provide another option for planning your day.
