Taufkirchen: Farmhouse, Baroque and Discoveries in the Hachinger Valley
Accommodation in Taufkirchen
Taufkirchen can be explored through stories of many different kinds: a historic farm offers a glimpse of rural life, the parish church represents the Baroque period, and the Hachinger Valley offers everything from archaeological finds to cycling routes. There are also cultural and theatre venues featuring music, art and performances.
Wolfschneiderhof: Rural History
Wolfschneiderhof is one of Taufkirchen’s oldest buildings. The listed building dates from the early 18th century. Since 1986, the farm has served as a local history museum focusing on rural life. The exhibits centre on rural domestic culture and agricultural tools. Exhibitions on archaeology and settlement history in the Hachinger Valley are held there regularly, as are traditional events.
Personalised tours can be arranged with the local heritage officer. Arrange an appointment before your visit. This allows you to plan a stay focused on everyday history or the changing exhibition topics.
The Celtic House and Archaeological Traces
The Celtic House is a reconstruction of a type of Celtic house once common in the area. The building contains documentation on archaeological excavations in the Hachinger Valley. Finds associated with the Celtic House include Bell Beaker graves, the cellar of a Roman villa rustica and the floor plans of Celtic settlement houses. These traces point to different forms of settlement: graves, the cellar of a Roman country estate and the floor plans of dwellings each tell us about different aspects of life in earlier times.
Baroque Art in the Parish Church
The parish church of St John the Baptist is considered a late Baroque landmark of Taufkirchen. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1737 and 1738, and its Baroque furnishings date from the first half of the 18th century. Ignatz Schilling painted the ceiling frescoes. The church also contains Hilprand’s gravestone from the Taufkircher family. It is considered one of the few surviving tomb slabs of its period in Upper Bavaria. For those interested in culture, the church offers two distinct points of interest: the Baroque design of the interior and a surviving memorial to the Taufkircher family.
Cultural and Theatre Events
The Cultural and Convention Centre has served as a cultural and theatre venue for more than 35 years. Check the current programme before your arrival. Ritter-Hilprand-Hof presents music, theatre, art and cabaret. Individual performances and dates may change. If you are planning your stay around a particular performance, check the programme and date in advance.
Cycling Routes and Getting Around the Hachinger Valley
The Hachinger Valley landscape conservation area includes parts of Taufkirchen and Oberhaching. The cycling routes described in the Hachinger Valley are around 25 to 60 kilometres long and are said to run mainly along paved, low-traffic side roads, forest tracks and field paths. Route details and conditions may change; check the information before setting out. You can also start cycling in the Hachinger Valley directly from home, without a car.
Digital offerings also explore the Hachinger Bach. One section of the children’s audio tour passes through the old town and continues to Taufkirchen; check availability before your outing. The Hachinger Bach app offers photos, walking information and audio content about the stream. Before using it, check the availability of both the app and its content.
For scheduled performances and planned tours, it is worth checking the programme and route information.
