Accommodation in Theisseil
Cross-country skiing in the municipality, churches in Wilchenreuth and Letzau, and cultural and natural attractions in the wider Neustadt An Der Waldnaab destination give a stay in Theisseil a variety of highlights.
Cross-country skiing, churches and local history
There is parking at the Letzau sports clubhouse, with direct access to the cross-country ski trails. The Ski-Langlaufgemeinschaft Weiden / Letzau e.V. offers four trails in the municipality, with panoramic views. Snow and trail conditions depend on the season; check local conditions before travelling.
The churches also offer distinct highlights. Wilchenreuth has been part of the Simultankirchenradweg since 2015; St. Ulrich’s Church in Wilchenreuth is on Route 6. In the village of Letzau, St. John of Nepomuk Church was consecrated by Bishop Müller in 2005. It features large, three-part stained-glass windows. This brings together a connection to a church trail and a specific architectural detail.
In the wider Neustadt An Der Waldnaab destination: trails and nature
Neustadt an der Waldnaab district is part of the Upper Palatinate Forest destination. Hiking, cycling, museum visits and swimming in numerous bathing waters are among the options there. One specific route is the Bockl: the 52 km trail runs from Neustadt an der Waldnaab to Eslarn along a historic railway line and can be used on foot, by bike or on inline skates.
The Bockl is mostly paved and traffic-free. Gradients along the route rarely exceed 3 percent. These details provide specific points of comparison with the four cross-country ski trails: the Bockl is a longer route for several types of use, while the ski trails are dedicated to cross-country skiing. There is a direct rail connection at the Bockl’s starting point in Neustadt an der Waldnaab. Trains run hourly to the terminus of the Nuremberg–Neustadt an der Waldnaab line; from there, you can transfer directly to a bike. Check the timetable before travelling.
Geological attractions are also part of the wider destination. The Parkstein basalt cone was added to the list of Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes in 2003 and was designated a National Geotope in 2006. A volcanic eruption is staged every hour at the Parkstein Volcano Experience, where it can be experienced on three levels. Check the times before your visit. The historic walking tour of Parkstein starts at the Landrichter Castle, which houses the Parkstein Volcano Experience Museum. Geopark rangers offer guided tours of the basalt wall, the rock cellars and the basalt cone; check availability before travelling.
Baroque architecture and Zoigl in the destination
In Speinshart, Baroque architecture and a well-preserved historic monastery village come together: both are part of a cultural heritage of European significance. Speinshart Abbey Church is one of the most important Baroque buildings in southern Germany and is distinguished by its Italian High Baroque interior. A public guided tour of the church takes place every Sunday and public holiday at 3 p.m. Check the time on the abbey’s official website before travelling, as tour times may change.
Another regional tradition is Zoigl. In Windischeschenbach, 17 Zoigl hosts, including 12 authentic communal brewers, take turns serving this beer speciality in their Zoigl taverns on weekends. The number of hosts and serving dates may change. The wider destination thus offers a range of options, from active tours and geology to Baroque architecture and a distinctive beer tradition.
