Flossenbürg combines a striking granite landscape with castle ruins, a natural swimming lake, trails for a range of interests and a place of remembrance. You can shape your trip around the things that interest you most: scenery and activity, water, winter activities or history. When looking for accommodation, this selection can help you identify your personal priorities for your stay.

Schlossberg: Granite and Castle Ruins

Schlossberg is a 732-metre-high granite summit. In some places, its onion-skin-like layers are clearly visible—a distinctive feature of the landscape. The Weg des Granits circular trail leads around Schlossberg and provides information about the mountain’s formation and history. If you are interested in the geology of Flossenbürg, this offers a thematic perspective that differs from the history of the village.

Flossenbürg Castle Ruins rise above the village on Schlossberg and are freely accessible at any time. They add a historic accent to the landscape. The circular trail focuses on the mountain’s formation and history; the ruins represent Flossenbürg Castle. Both topics offer different points of departure for exploring the area.

Gaisweiher and Trails for Different Days

Gaisweiher is a nine-hectare natural swimming lake in Flossenbürg. The Schattenweg begins at the Gaisweiher leisure and camping facility and leads all the way around the lake. It is a summer and winter trail; in winter, it is used at your own risk, as it is neither cleared of snow nor gritted. This means the route can be considered in different ways depending on the season, with winter conditions requiring particular attention when planning.

Another hiking trail starts at the sports ground in Flossenbürg and leads via the district of Gaismühle to Gaisweiher. There are benches along the way. In winter, this trail is also used at your own risk. No distance or walking time is specified for this route, so you can plan based on the named landmarks and the time you have available.

There is also a specific starting point in the village for a cycling tour: Route 9 of the Simultankirchen Cycle Route begins at the Protestant St. Pankratius Church, Hohenstaufenstraße 30. When planning, you can choose between a circular walk around the lake, a hike via Gaismühle and the start of a cycling route without treating the activities as interchangeable.

Castle, Granite and Remembrance

The Castle and Stonemasons’ Museum on Silberhüttenstraße covers the history of Flossenbürg Castle and the origins of the local granite. Guided tours are organised by the municipal tourism office. The topics link the history of the castle and village with the stone that also shapes Schlossberg. If you are interested in both aspects, the museum and the landscape can each form a different focus of your trip.

The exhibition “Flossenbürg Concentration Camp 1938–1945” uses documents, objects, quotations and firsthand accounts by former prisoners. It offers insights into everyday life in the camp, the struggle to survive and mass death. This is a moving historical focus that differs distinctly from the nature and outdoor activities.

A one-hour guided tour of the former quarry of Flossenbürg Concentration Camp complements the tour of the concentration camp. Visits to the quarry are weather-dependent. If you plan to take this tour, bear in mind that visiting the quarry depends on the weather.

Cycling and Winter Sports Compared

The Wurmstein ski lift is located at Gaisweiher. It offers options for families and advanced skiers; operation depends on conditions. Alongside the lake and the Schattenweg, winter sports are therefore also an option at Gaisweiher. Whether this activity suits your trip depends on which offerings you want to prioritise.

The wider destination of Neustadt an der Waldnaab offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, museum visits and swimming in numerous bathing waters. A longer cycling option there is the Bockl: this 52-kilometre route runs from Neustadt an der Waldnaab to Eslarn along a historic railway line. It can be travelled on foot, by bike or on inline skates; it is mostly paved and traffic-free, with gradients exceeding three percent only rarely. The route’s starting point in Neustadt an der Waldnaab is directly accessible by train. Trains run hourly to the terminus of the Nuremberg–Neustadt an der Waldnaab line, from where you can transfer straight to your bike. Check the timetable before travelling. This makes it possible to distinguish Flossenbürg’s local landscape from a regional tour, without attributing the Bockl to Flossenbürg.
