Langenzenn: Monastery History, Museums and Paths along the Zenn
Accommodation in Langenzenn
Langenzenn brings together traces of a medieval collegiate monastery, a theatrical tradition and leisure activities along the Zenn. The former monastery complex tells stories of different centuries through its architectural features and works of art; the ZennOase combines exercise, play and a quiet zone. Cycle routes through the cultural landscape and museums covering local and natural history add further highlights. You can tailor your stay to suit your interests in culture, active outdoor pursuits or a mix of both.
Monastery, Church and Art History
The former Augustinian collegiate monastery was founded in 1409 by the burgraves of Nuremberg, John III and Frederick VI, and rebuilt by 1468. Its cloister is considered the best preserved in Middle Franconia. The ribbed vaults have partly sculpted keystones; in the south wing, a net vault spans three and a half bays. These details make the corridor particularly vivid as an example of architecture.
The church also offers a range of works from different periods in art history. Veit Stoss created the Annunciation relief in 1513 for Langenzenn Monastery Church; it is now in the church’s former sacrament house. The choir windows of Langenzenn Evangelical Town Church were made towards the end of the 19th century. Their vivid colours depict episodes from the life of Christ.
Theatre and Cultural Experiences
The Langenzenn Monastery Courtyard Theatre takes place annually and was founded in 1981. Its amateur theatre productions are directed by professionals. The historic buildings of the former monastery also provide a setting for concerts and theatre performances. If you plan to attend a performance, check the current schedule.
Guided tours are available for local residents, newcomers and visitors. Topics include the market square, monastery and church, as well as Lindenturm, the local history museum and Fronveste. The Langenzenn Local History Association also opens its museums to groups outside regular hours by prior arrangement. If you are planning a tour or group visit, ask in advance about the relevant date and arrangements.
Museums and Local History
The local history museum has Romanesque sandstone masonry in its foundation walls, making it likely the oldest building in the town. Its exhibits include the geology of the Zenn and Farrnbach valleys, including uranium ore from Dillenberg. Fronveste has served as an extension of the local history museum since 1995. The basement houses an old town pharmacy dating from 1557, while the upper floor presents the town’s history.
ZennOase, Landscape and Cycle Routes
The ZennOase lies directly beside the Zenn and extends for about 200 metres. The complex includes an exercise circuit, a quiet zone and a beer garden. There is also an adventure playground and a playground for young children, a labyrinth, a water playground and a bouldering rock for play and exercise. Public plantings of native fruit, vegetables and herbs complete the area; visitors are welcome to harvest the edible plants.
The Langenzenn Siebener Cycle Route offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. It passes through a varied cultural landscape, crossing the Zenn in several places and following quiet streams and biotopes, lush meadows, hedgerows, groups of trees and woodlands. The Hohenzollern Adventure Cycle Route passes through Langenzenn’s old town and by the monastery. At the monastery entrance, objects can be brought to life using an app; if you would like to try this experience, check in advance whether the app is available.
Langenzenn is also on the Burgenstraße, one of Germany’s most historic holiday routes. It runs from Mannheim to Bayreuth and connects around 60 castles and palaces.
