Obernzell on the Danube: Castle, Art and Activities
Accommodation in Obernzell
Obernzell combines impressions of the Danube with a remarkable architectural and cultural history. The broad promenade, the castle and its museum, and the art in the castle gardens each offer something different. There are also opportunities for sport and activities on the water. Which aspects of the town you choose to focus on can also influence your choice of accommodation.
Danube Promenade and Castle
The Obernzell Danube Promenade is a wide, level, paved path along the Danube. It offers views of the river and its distinctive valley. The path is well maintained and can be used with a stroller or wheelchair—a practical guide for anyone who needs their routes to be accessible. Views of the river and valley also give the walk a scenic focus.
Obernzell Castle was transformed from a simple fortress into a grand Renaissance castle in the 16th century. In the 17th century, it temporarily served as the seat of government for the Prince-Bishops of Passau after their residence burned down. The Bavarian Danube Region Museum in the castle is devoted to the cultural history of the Danube region: across approximately 800 square metres, it displays around 500 objects. The museum opened on 17 July 2025.
The Knights’ Hall is also distinguished by its Renaissance details, including a Renaissance ceiling, a frieze of popes, a wooden cornice decorated with maxims, and a red marble fireplace. The windows offer views of the Danube and the historic market town. A water feature at the castle depicts the Danube in the region and its course through the municipality of Obernzell.
Architectural History in the Town Centre
The historic market square was laid out in the 13th century and redesigned in the 19th century in the Inn-Salzach style, which has been preserved to this day. Those interested in religious architecture will find two distinct types of church in Obernzell: St. Mary’s Assumption is designed as a cruciform central building. Its bright, spacious main hall is topped by a shallow dome. The late Gothic church of St. Margaret was built in the Middle Ages and given a Baroque makeover in 1699. It was once the parish church and is now the cemetery church.
Art, Events and Activities
An art walk through Obernzell leads to the “Sculptures of Silence.” The castle garden also features sculptures by artist Renate König-Schalinski, which blend into the garden landscape and can be viewed by visitors. With its large open-air stage, the garden also serves as a venue for cultural events and celebrations, including concerts, markets and club celebrations. Dates may vary; if you have specific plans, it is worth checking the event calendar.
At Obernzell harbour, the Donautal Sports and Leisure Centre offers activities including canoeing, water skiing, swimming, beach volleyball, tennis, Bavarian curling, table tennis and football. The options range from water activities to land-based sports. The Danube-Moldau Cycle Route starts in the Danube Valley near Obernzell. It follows the former cog railway track, with a gradient of 6 percent, to Untergriesbach. The gradient information helps you assess the route; also bear in mind that signposting may change.
The “Hafnerzell” Danube ferry runs between the landing stage on the “Jochensteiner Straße” district road in Obernzell and “Nibelungen Straße” (B130) in the municipality of Vichtenstein in Upper Austria. It carries passengers, bicycles, cars, buses and lorries. Its operating hours vary by season, so check the timetable for your planned visit.
