Kaltennordheim combines evidence of its town history with a lively tradition and circular trails offering a variety of experiences. Churches, the local history museum and the marriage market tell different stories about the town, while the Rhön circular trails focus on getting out and about.

Town History and the Local History Museum

Kaltennordheim’s Kilianskirche was built in the 14th century to replace a wooden church. The Nikolaikirche was added in 1597 as the town’s second and larger church. The site of the former Merlinsburg also has several layers of history: the Amtshaus (administrative building) was built there between 1752 and 1754. Today, the Merlinsburg building houses the local history museum.

The local history museum’s collection includes the museum barn. It displays historic agricultural implements and offers insights into rural life, including baking, milk processing and food storage. A room in the museum’s gatehouse focuses on Johann Wolfgang Goethe, who stayed in Kaltennordheim in 1780 and 1782. Please note when planning your visit: the section of the local history museum associated with the Merlinsburg is currently being renovated and is closed to visitors.

The “On Old Paths” town tour is available on request. It takes in, among other places, the Kilianskirche, the historic old town and the surviving town wall. The itinerary thus includes not only individual buildings but also the old town and a section of the former town fortifications.

The Marriage Market and Pentecost Traditions

The marriage market takes place at Pentecost and is now held every year. The market was first held in 1563; in the 19th century, it developed into a folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön. This long-standing local tradition gives you a specific reason to visit. As the Pentecost date varies from year to year, check the dates for the relevant year when planning your trip.

Hiking on Two Rhön Circular Trails

The Kaltennordheim Rhön Circular Trail 1 provides specific details to help you plan your hike: it is 11.0 kilometres long, takes about four hours and is considered easy to moderately difficult. It starts, among other places, at Kaltennordheim Town Hall. The Kaltennordheim Rhön Circular Trail 2 also starts at the town hall, initially follows the Felda through the town and partly crosses the approximately 50-hectare Große Hardt nature reserve.

The two routes offer different experiences: for the first circular trail, the distance, approximate duration and difficulty level are specified; the second begins with a stretch along the Felda and partly passes through the nature reserve. When planning, you can choose between a hike with a clearly stated distance and duration and a route whose described course includes both the town and the nature reserve.

More Destinations in Wartburgkreis

Other destinations in the wider Wartburgkreis area each have their own appeal. More than 830 years old, Creuzburg is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes, with a ring wall stretching over 340 metres and an enclosed area of 7,400 square metres. If you are interested in paths through a park, the grounds of Altenstein Palace have around 20 kilometres of park paths, including a 4.3-kilometre circular trail.

The Point Alpha Memorial in Wartburgkreis offers another historical perspective as an authentic site from the Cold War. A permanent exhibition in the House on the Border presents the history of Germany’s division. These destinations add further topics to Kaltennordheim’s town history and hiking trails that may factor into your choice of travel interests.
