Discover Andenhausen
Accommodation in Andenhausen
Andenhausen combines a basalt rock formation above the village with hiking trails and a nearby core zone. If you are considering accommodation in Andenhausen, you can make these nature and hiking destinations a focus of your trip planning.
Hiking around Katzenstein
The Katzenstein basalt rock formation lies above Andenhausen. A hiking trail of approximately 4 km runs around the rock. The approximate distance gives you a guide for planning your day; check local conditions before setting out.
The 4.8-hectare Schmerbach core zone is located near Andenhausen, directly on the “Green Belt.” It can be reached on foot via the Rhön Höhen-Weg, the “Green Belt” Border Hiking Trail and the HOCHRHÖNER. The core zone is a natural deciduous forest area with various forest types and a small stream. Stay on the trails: access to areas of the core zone is prohibited away from the trails.
The two north–south variants of the HOCHRHÖNER also converge again in Andenhausen. The village’s history also includes a striking turning point: until November 1989, a road ended abruptly in Andenhausen; in December 1990, the restored road was reopened to traffic.
Culture and more trails in the wider destination of Kaltennordheim
The wider destination of Kaltennordheim offers more cultural and hiking experiences. St Kilian’s Church in Kaltennordheim was built in the 14th century as a successor to a wooden church. St Nicholas’ Church was built in 1597 as the second and larger church within the town. The Amtshaus (district office) was built on the site of the former Merlinsburg Castle between 1752 and 1754.
The museum barn of the Kaltennordheim local history museum displays historic farming tools and depictions of rural life, including baking, dairy processing and food storage. In addition to the churches and their architectural history, objects and activities from everyday rural life are also featured as distinct cultural themes in the wider destination.
For hiking in Kaltennordheim, the Rhön Circular Trail Kaltennordheim 1 offers specific route details: it is 11.0 km long, takes about four hours and is considered easy to moderately difficult. It starts, among other places, at Kaltennordheim Town Hall. The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltennordheim 2 also starts at the town hall and initially follows the Felda River through the town. Parts of it pass through the approximately 50-hectare Großer Hardt nature reserve. For the first trail, the distance, estimated time and difficulty help with planning; for the second, its described route through the town and nature reserve provides a point of reference.
The “Heiratsmarkt” (marriage market) in Kaltennordheim takes place at Pentecost. It was first held in 1563 and has been held annually ever since; in the 19th century, it developed into a folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön. As the event is tied to Pentecost, check the dates for your travel year. The “Auf alten Spuren” (“In Old Footsteps”) guided town tour includes, among other places, St Kilian’s Church, the historic old town and the surviving town wall. It is available on request.
