Unterelsbach: Church, Hiking Trails and the Saueiche Oak
Accommodation in Unterelsbach
Unterelsbach combines a distinctive village history with hiking destinations and recurring events. The Church of St. Simon and Judas Thaddaeus, standing on a hill, shapes the appearance of this Rhön village and can be seen from afar. Other highlights include the annual Saueiche Run, the Saueiche Festival on Ascension Day and several circular trails, each with its own starting points and destinations.
A Church with an Unusual Building History
As of 15 April 2026, the church is listed as a protected monument in the Bavarian monument register. Originally a choir-tower church, it is now a hall church with a recessed west choir and an east tower topped by a pointed spire. The tower, rebuilt in a post-Gothic style in 1615–17, retains its medieval, barrel-vaulted choir-tower ground floor. The nave has a pitched roof, while the choir has a hipped roof dating from 1810.
The roof structure also has unusual architectural features that impressed experienced specialists. Those interested in architectural forms will find several historical layers in one building: the surviving medieval lower tower, the post-Gothic renovation and the choir roof added later.
Saueiche Festival and Running Event
The Saueiche Festival is held annually on Ascension Day by the Unterelsbach branch of the Rhön Club. Hikers are invited to stop for refreshments by the large old oak that day, where food and drinks are served. Its fixed link to Ascension Day makes the festival a special date to include in annual plans.
The TSV Unterelsbach Saueiche Run is held every June. Anyone who enjoys getting around under their own steam can take part. Most of the routes follow field and forest tracks; the main race offers views of Kreuzberg and Heidelstein. The event details may vary from year to year. Ascension Day and June therefore offer different reasons to visit: refreshments by the old oak or a sporting event with views of the Rhön landscape.
Circular Trails with Different Destinations
Rhön Circular Trail 1, “Five Districts,” can be started at the sports ground in Unterelsbach. The route is 15.9 kilometres long and takes about 5.5 hours. Within the wider destination of Oberelsbach, this trail connects the market municipality’s five districts. The stated distance and approximate duration help you plan for this longer day hike.
Rhön Circular Trail 8, “Hart Forest and Hundsrücken,” starts at the car park for the Butterfly Nature Trail on the road to Unterelsbach and follows the Elsbach for part of the way. Rhön Circular Trail 9, “Butterfly Nature Trail,” is a family-friendly hiking route. Rhön Circular Trail 10, “To the Saueiche,” also starts at the sports ground. Its destination is the natural monument Saueiche, beside a rest area.
On Rhön Circular Trail 10, the destination is complemented by open views of Kreuzberg near Bischofsheim and Himmeldunkberg. Its treeless, “bald” summit stands out in particular. The trail’s natural monument and viewpoints give it a different character from Trail 1, whose distance and duration offer concrete guidance for planning your time.

More Experiences in the Wider Destination of Oberelsbach
The wider destination of Oberelsbach also offers its own attractions. At the House of the Lange Rhön Biosphere Centre, a permanent exhibition provides information about the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Children can take part in a rally there: Elsbeth the Rhön sheep asks questions and encourages them to look closely.
The Oberelsbach market municipality also hosts the Rhön Masked Carnival every two years. Spanmänner, Fosenöchter and other participants parade through the streets in traditional costumes and historic wooden masks; the event is open to the public. When looking for accommodation, you can consider whether your trip will focus more on the church and its building history, a hike, an event date or an excursion to one of the attractions in the wider destination.
