Discover Rhön-Grabfeld: moorland, fortified churches and monasteries
Accommodation in Rhön-Grabfeld
Rhön-Grabfeld combines nature experiences in the Rhön with fortified churches, monasteries and museums. The area is located in the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve; its distinctive landscapes include strictly protected moorland areas and volcanic basalt formations. Its cultural attractions also offer a variety of perspectives, ranging from everyday rural history to contemporary art. You can tailor your stay to the experiences that interest you most.
Nature between conservation and activity
The Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps. The Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone in the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. A wooden boardwalk crosses parts of the moor, information boards explain the route, and an observation tower offers a view of the Black Moor. The path, boards and viewpoint each offer a different way to explore the landscape.
At Gangolfsberg, natural and geological history meet: the nature forest reserve is part of the biosphere reserve’s core zone. The basalt prism wall formed 30 to 10 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Rhön and can be explored on the Gangolfsberg nature trail. The route is about 2.5 kilometres long; sturdy footwear is required. Guided group tours are available on request. Those looking for hiking opportunities in the district can also explore the premium hiking trail “DER HOCHRHÖNER”.
Fortified churches, a monastery and history
The fortified church in Ostheim vor der Rhön was declared a monument of national significance in 2003. It is Germany’s largest and particularly well-preserved fortified church. The Fortified Churches Museum in Ostheim presents a dozen other fortified churches from the region, including those in Nordheim, Oberstreu and Kaltensundheim. A visit therefore combines an important landmark with insights into further examples of this type of architecture.
The Kreuzberg also brings landscape and cultural history together: at 928 metres, it is the highest mountain in the Rhön-Grabfeld district. A Franciscan monastery with its own brewery has stood there since 1644. Together with its pilgrimage church, Kreuzberg Monastery is a spiritual centre in Lower Franconia. Its elevation, monastery and pilgrimage church make the Kreuzberg a destination in its own right, alongside the museums and historic buildings.
The Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen presents 350 years of everyday rural history in Lower Franconia and the Rhön. It does so with faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads. Around 30 historic buildings stand on the museum grounds, which cover approximately 12 hectares, including farms, craft buildings and a village school. Hands-on activities about crafts and traditions complement the theme with demonstrations, practical courses and events. The Rhön-Zügle museum railway travels through the Streutal with steam and diesel locomotives.
Art and regional collections
Wechterswinkel Monastery houses a district cultural centre for visual art, music, literature and lifestyle. The ground-floor gallery shows contemporary art, with a focus on sculpture. The district gallery in the Old Hospital in Mellrichstadt offers another perspective on the region: its collection includes significant paintings and sculptures from the Baroque period to the present day; all the works have a regional connection. Doku-Z Mellrichstadt is also home to the Hainberg Barracks Documentation Centre, which documents a border garrison from the Cold War.
A visit to the Old Hospital also offers a seasonal highlight: the museum café serves homemade cakes, and in the warmer months you can enjoy them in the museum garden. As the café’s offerings may change, check the latest information before your trip.
Choose a focus for your accommodation search
When looking for suitable accommodation, it helps to first decide which experiences you want to shape your stay. Ostheim vor der Rhön is known for its fortified church and museum of fortified churches, Fladungen for its open-air museum and museum railway, and Mellrichstadt for its district gallery and museum café. Wechterswinkel Monastery adds exhibitions and a cultural centre to the options. If you would rather focus on nature and hiking, use the Gangolfsberg nature trail, the Black Moor or hiking routes on the HOCHRHÖNER to help guide your choice of location. This way, you can shape your trip around specific destinations rather than a general idea of the region.
