Explore Schäftlarn through a range of themes: the monastery represents Baroque architecture and garden design, the Neuchl estate tells the story of a small-farmer’s house, and the Nature themed trail offers a longer route along the Isar. Each has its own focus, giving your stay a distinct rhythm—from historic buildings to time outdoors.

Monastery culture: architecture and gardens

The monastery church in Schäftlarn is considered a Rococo gem worth seeing. It is also thought to be one of the finest late Baroque sacred buildings in southern Germany. Together with the 300-year-old main monastery building, it forms a significant architectural ensemble and is one of Upper Bavaria’s outstanding cultural monuments. The main monastery building itself is not open to visitors.

A fountain in the Prelate’s Garden is fed by a spring on the nearby hillside. Buildings dating from the Baroque period surround the garden, and its curving boundary wall also dates from that era. The garden attracts rose enthusiasts and people who enjoy beautiful surroundings. The fountain, buildings and wall each add a distinct architectural accent to the grounds.

Church history in Schäftlarn

St. George’s Church in Hohenschäftlarn also offers a link to the area’s history: it is one of the oldest branch churches of the former Schäftlarn monastery parish. The present building was constructed between 1729 and 1732 under the direction of Munich master mason Johann Georg Ettenhofer. The precise dates and the named master builder make this church a specific point of interest for anyone interested in the architectural history of the area.

From a short circular walk to the Isar Nature Trail

A short circular walk starts opposite the monastery cemetery. It first climbs the hill on a paved path, passing the “Maria Rast” chapel, then continues along the hillside. The walk also offers a view of the monastery church. Check local conditions before setting out.

For a different kind of outing, the 9.6-kilometre-long “Nature” themed trail runs along the Isar. It stretches between the Dürnsteiner Bridge near Schäftlarn and the Icking weir; the estimated walking time is three hours. This lets you choose between the short circular walk by the monastery and a longer hike along the Isar when planning your day. Schäftlarn Monastery is also a stop on the Isar Cycle Path, with a church, monastery tavern and beer garden.

The Neuchl estate and its history

The Neuchl estate, also known as Stallwastl, was first mentioned in 1492. It was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1828 and subsequently rebuilt. The estate dates from 1829 and is the last authentically preserved small-farmer’s house in Schäftlarn. Its documented history and its special status as a preserved small-farmer’s house are therefore central to its significance.

For 2026, visiting hours were listed as the first Saturday of each month from May to October, from 2 to 4 p.m. If you plan to visit the estate in a later year, check the current opening times in advance.

Choose your route and accommodation based on your travel interests

The monastery is accessible via the A 95 Munich–Garmisch-Partenkirchen motorway and the Schäftlarn exit. Take the S 7 to Ebenhausen-Schäftlarn station; from there, a footpath leads to the monastery. Check current connections before you leave.

When looking for accommodation in Schäftlarn, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: monastery culture and the circular walk, or a longer day on the Isar Nature themed trail. This way, you can guide your search by the experiences you want to plan.
