The Baroque castle of the Princes of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst is the landmark of Schillingsfürst. There are also museums covering very different subjects: princely history, water supply, art, language and the French Foreign Legion. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will also find two different route options—a pilgrimage route through several countries and a cycle route that starts in Schillingsfürst.

Castle history and water supply

The Castle Museum brings to life the history of the German Empire under Wilhelm II and the importance of the Hohenlohe, Sayn-Wittgenstein and Radziwill families to the princely house of Schillingsfürst. Paintings and ceiling murals are among the exhibition topics, as are tapestries, furniture and porcelain. Guided tours are offered to visitors during opening hours and on request. Make arrangements for a guided tour in advance.

The Brunnenhaus Museum presents a different facet of the castle’s history: the historic ox-tread water-lifting system was built in 1702 and supplied the castle with water for centuries. The former rooms of the well keepers also offer a glimpse of the living conditions of the rural population in the 19th century. The water tower adds a later chapter to this story. Built in 1902 in the style of a Wilhelminian lighthouse, it supplied Schillingsfürst with water until the 1970s. Inside the brick tower, a spiral staircase winds past works by French painter Michel Leroux all the way to the top.

Art, language and European history

The Museum of the French Foreign Legion at the castle is the Legion’s only official museum outside France. Its exhibition traces the Legion’s origins, from recruitment in Schillingsfürst in 1792 to the founding of the Légion étrangère in 1831. The Liszt Museum at the castle focuses on something different: it explores the friendship between Franz Liszt and Cardinal Gustav Adolf of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, whom Liszt visited in Schillingsfürst several times.

The Ludwig Doerfler Museum houses the life’s work of Schillingsfürst artist Ludwig Doerfler (1905–1992). As a cultural meeting place, the museum provides a setting for temporary exhibitions, artists’ symposia, musical performances and readings by philosophers. In the Museum of the Yenish Language, housed in the museum’s Haus der Heimat, an exhibition presents the heritage of the Yenish language. Schillingsfürst thus brings together a variety of perspectives: art and events, language history and the history of historic institutions.

On pilgrimage or by bike

The Via Romea is a pilgrimage route from Norway through Denmark and Stade near Hamburg to Rome. Among other places, it passes through Rothenburg, Schillingsfürst, Feuchtwangen and Dinkelsbühl. The association responsible has revived and revitalised the original pilgrimage route. The Wörnitz Cycle Route offers a different focus: this 107-kilometre route starts at the source of the Wörnitz in Schillingsfürst, passes through Dinkelsbühl and follows the Wörnitz before ending in Wassertrüdingen. This makes it easy to choose between two clearly distinct routes based on your preferred excursion or travel interest: walking a pilgrimage route across national borders or cycling along the Wörnitz.

The Princely Falconry is another possible stop, but it is currently closed. Before travelling, check whether it has reopened and what programme details apply. When it is operating, visitors can watch the birds’ flying skills at daily flight demonstrations, while experienced falconers share information about the animals.

Choose accommodation based on your travel interests

When looking for accommodation in Schillingsfürst, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: the castle and museums, the history of water and art, or a pilgrimage or cycle route. These priorities can help shape your travel plans without requiring you to fit all your interests into a single itinerary. If a guided tour of the Castle Museum is important to you, remember that tours are offered during opening hours and on request, and confirm the specific visiting details in advance. For the Falconry, check whether it has reopened and what programme is on offer.
