Discover Sugenheim
Accommodation in Sugenheim
In Sugenheim, architectural history and wine country come together, offering different ways to spend the day: castles, a church and museums represent different eras, while the WeinWanderWelt can be explored on circular hiking trails and valley cycle routes. Agriculture and viticulture shape the landscape. Small vineyard plots lie among orchards and hedgerows. You can therefore focus on cultural history, outdoor activities or a mix of the two.
Castles, a church and traces of history
The Old Castle in Sugenheim is a former moated castle dating from the 14th century. Its three-winged layout with four corner towers defines its architectural form. The castle was first mentioned in 1376; after its destruction in 1525, it was rebuilt on the same site between 1525 and 1529. Today it houses the Toy Museum, opened by Jan and Manuela Kube in 1988. Here, medieval origins, reconstruction and a later use as a museum come together in one place.
St. Erhard’s Church and the New Castle also reflect different building periods. The church was built in 1765/66 in the so-called Margrave style; inside are epitaphs to the long-standing patrons. The New Castle dates from the 16th century and received an extension and a cladding in the Margrave style around 1746/49. The style thus links two of the historic buildings, even though they were built at different times. The Deutenheim Gate dates from 1602.
The former sheep barn tells a different story of changing use: today it houses the local history museum. Together with the Toy Museum in the Old Castle, it broadens the picture of Sugenheim’s history through two different museum themes. The buildings themselves set the scene—from a former moated castle to a former agricultural building.
Wine country and trails
Viticulture is part of a landscape also shaped by agriculture. Small vineyard plots are nestled among orchards and hedgerows rather than dominating the landscape on their own. If you want to experience Sugenheim outdoors, you can explore the “WeinWanderWelt” on circular hiking trails or valley cycle routes. These two types of routes offer a practical starting point for planning your day: would you rather focus on hiking or a cycling trip? This way, you can take in the landscape and its trails together, without treating culture and activity as separate travel ideas.
Neustadt a.d.Aisch in the wider travel region
Neustadt a.d.Aisch also offers its own cultural and urban attractions. The museums in the Old Castle in Neustadt a.d.Aisch are housed in the former residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Kulmbach-Bayreuth. At the Köstner smithy, tools, machines, lampshades and the lighting, including the switches, have been preserved in working original condition. The smithy is considered a unique cultural treasure. Together, the two places offer insights into different aspects of Neustadt a.d.Aisch’s cultural heritage.
There are various ways to explore the town: on a self-guided walking tour, you can discover notable buildings, squares and lanes. Guided tours of the old town and themed tours led by trained guides from the history and local heritage association share historical facts and anecdotes. Another option is the NeuStadtAktivWeg, which links several stops and sights along an approximately two-kilometre route through the town. It crosses the island by the WasenmĂĽhle and continues into Bleiche Park, where a senior fitness trail features a range of exercise equipment.
Seasonal offerings in Neustadt a.d.Aisch include themed markets featuring regional specialties such as asparagus, honey, wine and carp. As the market offerings vary by season, it is worth checking the current events calendar before your trip. Neustadt an der Aisch is also a stop on the Würzburg–Nuremberg railway line, is part of the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN) and can be reached by bus, regional express trains and S-Bahn.
Start making your choice by considering which of the experiences described you would like to shape your trip.
