Prien a.Chiemsee: Culture, Water and Good Food
Accommodation in Prien am Chiemsee
Prien a.Chiemsee brings together waterside experiences, cultural heritage and guided activities. The PRIENAVERA Erlebnisbad is located on the shores of Lake Chiemsee; in Eichental, the river setting, nature trails and Kneipp basins shape the experience of the landscape. There are also historic buildings, art collections and tours that combine cycling with regional cuisine. This lets you tailor your stay to suit a range of interests.
Experience the water and landscape
The PRIENAVERA Erlebnisbad is located right on the shores of Lake Chiemsee. Its water and sauna facilities offer unobstructed views of Herrenchiemsee Palace. The combination of water, sauna and views gives this experience a different focus from the nature experiences in Eichental.
Eichental in Prien am Chiemsee is located right by the river and is a popular local recreation area with nature trails and a Kneipp basin. The trails focus on nature, while the Kneipp basin adds another connection to water. Together, these offerings represent different sides of the Prien experience: views of the lake and palace on the one hand, and a riverside setting and nature trails on the other.
Buildings, collections and art history
The KronastHaus acquired its present appearance in 1784 and dates back to 1598. Its façade paintings are a striking feature, and the house’s history is shaped by the cabinetmaking trade. The building also displays an extensive art collection, with a focus on works by Hugo Kauffmann and selected works by important Chiemsee painters. Architecture, craftsmanship and art history come together in one particular place.
The Prien Local History Museum is located right on the market square. It is housed in a former craftsman’s house, the Beim Mayerpaul, and contains an important collection on the region’s history, art history and folklore. The museum offers a different perspective on regional history from the KronastHaus, with its façade paintings, craft heritage and art collection.
The adjoining Historic Gallery of Chiemsee Painters displays works by Maximilian Haushofer, Karl Raupp, Josef Wopfner, Hiasl Maier-Erding and Rudolf Sieck. Their works illustrate how the Chiemsee artists’ community came about. Since the mid-19th century, it has held an important place among Europe’s artists’ colonies. Art enthusiasts can thus explore individual artists alongside the story of an entire artistic community.
Guided tours and regional treats
The “Fruit & Wine” culinary tour begins with a visit to the old Prien fruit distillery. It then follows part of the Fruit and Culture Trail through Eichental and ends with a small tasting glass.
For cycling enthusiasts, the guided “Bike and Kneipp” tour offers a different way to experience the area. It takes place in May and June, starts in Prien and follows side roads and forest tracks via Aschau and Bernau before returning to Prien. Along the way, participants try out five different Kneipp basins. The combination of a cycling route and Kneipp stops is a defining feature of this tour.
Another guided cycling tour leads from Prien along side roads to the Seiserhof. It covers 25 km and is scheduled to take three hours. This distinguishes two different tour ideas: “Bike and Kneipp” combines a route via Aschau and Bernau with five Kneipp basins; the tour to the Seiserhof is described with a specific distance and planned duration.
The Schmankerl Tour also takes you through Prien am Chiemsee, visiting culinary stops and featuring local specialties from direct sellers in Prien. Unlike the “Fruit & Wine” culinary tour, which combines a visit to the fruit distillery with a walk through Eichental, this tour focuses on several culinary stops in Prien.
This makes it easier to decide what you would like to focus on during your stay, without having to commit to just one kind of outing. When planning the guided activities, it is worth checking the dates; “Bike and Kneipp” takes place in May and June.
