Discover Rosenheim: Architecture, Museums and Mangfall Park
Accommodation in Rosenheim
Rosenheim offers several sides to a city break: at Max-Josefs-Platz, townhouses in the Inn-Salzach style shape the scene; museums are dedicated to wood and the Inn; and Mangfall Park offers a different focus with opportunities for play and activity. Choosing the city for a stay lets you set your own priorities among architecture, riverside themes and time in the park.
Inn-Salzach Architecture at Max-Josefs-Platz
The historic Max-Josefs-Platz is now a pedestrian zone, a place to linger and a central square in Rosenheim. It has been designated a pedestrian zone since 1984. Magnificent townhouses in the Inn-Salzach style surround the square; arcades, vaulted ceilings and bay windows shape its appearance. Behind some of the towering parapet walls are hidden valley roofs.
The different architectural elements give the square a distinctive character. If you enjoy noticing details while strolling around the city, look beyond the façades as a whole: the arcades, bay windows and vaulted ceilings each have their own forms, while the high parapet walls partly conceal the roof design. This offers a chance to see the Inn-Salzach style through its specific features.
Wood and the Inn in the Museums
The Wood Technology Museum is housed in the listed Ellmaierhaus, a 16th-century building in the pedestrian zone. Covering more than 400 square metres, it presents the history of wood, as well as its processing and working in the past and present. Objects and models are complemented by video films, special exhibitions and educational activities. The subject therefore ranges from the history of the material to the ways it has been worked in different periods.
The Inn Museum focuses on something different. It showcases various hydraulic engineering methods, including work by Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking, and explores the craft of shipbuilding, also known as “Schopper”. In the “Schopperstadl”, the construction of a ship is explained along with the materials and tools required. There is also information about the history, mineral resources and finds from the Inn, as well as images of typical buildings along the river. If you are interested in craftsmanship, shipbuilding is the main focus here; if you would rather explore the river and its history, you will find other topics in the same museum.
Sculptures, a Church and a Park
Since 1987, the Salingarten in front of the KULTUR+KONGRESS ZENTRUM has been a sculpture garden. It features monumental sculptures by prominent artists from Rosenheim and the surrounding area. The Church of the Holy Blood in Rosenheim is an important Rococo church. Together with the townhouses at Max-Josefs-Platz, it adds another architectural point of reference to the city, highlighting different forms and scales.
Mangfall Park stretches for about 1.5 kilometres along the river on the former state garden show grounds. Its facilities include a children’s kayak course, a climbing frame and a playground. If you are planning a visit with children, you can take these specific opportunities for play and activity into account when choosing how to spend the day.
There is also a practical consideration for cycling travellers: bicycle repair stations around the city provide tools for minor repairs, such as pumping up a tyre or adjusting a saddle. Their locations may change over time, so check the current station locations before your ride.
Choose Accommodation Based on Your Interests
Before you search, consider which side of Rosenheim you want to shape your stay: the historic cityscape around Max-Josefs-Platz, the museums’ wood and Inn themes, the sculptures or the facilities at Mangfall Park.
If you are staying with children, the children’s kayak course, climbing frame and playground at Mangfall Park may be important considerations. If you are mainly interested in exploring culture and local history, the Wood Technology Museum, the Inn Museum, and the city’s squares and buildings offer specific themes to explore. Decide which of these experiences matters most to you and base your accommodation search on that personal priority.
