Griesstätt between art, history and trails
Accommodation in Griesstätt
Griesstätt offers several ways to explore the history of the town and municipality: artworks can be found at specific locations in town, churches tell stories of different building periods, and hiking and cycling routes lead through the municipal area. If you are looking for accommodation here, you can first consider whether you would like your stay to focus more on art and history or on tours between several places.
Artworks at prominent locations
The Marienbrunnen (Marian Fountain) stands in front of the parish church in the centre of the village and is probably the artist’s most remarkable work in Griesstätt. There is also a bronze sculpture of John the Baptist by Hans Huschka in front of the primary school. It depicts the Old and New Testaments, with John the Baptist as the mediator between them. This gives the work a narrative motif, while the fountain lends a different accent to the townscape. The entrance plaque at the town hall is also among Huschka’s works in Griesstätt. Together, the fountain, figure and plaque offer different examples of art at named locations around the town.
Traces of history and church architecture
The name Griesstätt is first mentioned in 924 in a document issued by Duke Arnulf of Bavaria, the so-called “Rihni document”. In 1205, Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg gave the church in Griesstätt to the neighbouring Attel Monastery. These two dates mark different stages in the town’s recorded history: the first mention of its name and a later connection between the church and the monastery.
Another focal point lies within the municipal area, in Altenhohenau. The Church of St Peter and Paul at the monastery is a Baroque reconstruction dating from around 1670/75, incorporating older sections dating back to 1235. It is associated with works of great artistic significance by Matthäus and Ignaz Günther. In Holzhausen stands the filial church of Maria Schnee, a small Baroque hall church from the second half of the 17th century, with a western roof turret and interior furnishings. The two churches offer different architectural points of interest: St Peter and Paul combines a Baroque reconstruction with older sections, while Maria Schnee is described as a small hall church.
Hiking and cycling routes in the municipal area
In the northern part of the municipal area, a hiking route leads through Altenhohenau, Kerschdorf, Streifl, Moosham and Kettenham to Griesstätt. A southern route also leads to Griesstätt, passing through Kettenham, Bergham, Holzhausen, Untermühle and Edenberg. Kettenham appears on both routes; the other places listed distinguish the northern and southern routes.
Both the Inn Cycle Path and the Mozart Cycle Path run through the municipal area. The eastern variant of the Inn Cycle Path passes through Vogtareuth and Griesstätt before reaching the old town of Wasserburg am Inn, which is surrounded by the Inn on seven-eighths of its perimeter. This section is listed as 65 kilometres long. Alongside hikes between places in the municipal area, there are also named cycling routes and a longer section of the Inn Cycle Path to choose from.
The Griesstätt municipal administration has a wide selection of hiking and cycling maps; the editions currently available may vary. If you are looking for accommodation in Griesstätt, distinguishing between the specific art and history sites in town and the routes through the municipal area can help with planning your trip. Choose where to stay based on the experiences you would like to focus on during your visit; the maps can help you find your way along the routes mentioned.
