In Görlsdorf Forest, ancient oaks and distinctive animal species come together, while the village church preserves architectural history spanning several centuries. From the viewing platform at the Heinz Sielmann Nature Experience Centre Wanninchen, you can look out over Lake Schlabendorf. These different attractions offer inspiration for a stay among forest nature, bird migration and history.

Forest nature and rare species

Görlsdorf Forest is home to 14 of the 18 bat species native to Brandenburg. These include the barbastelle bat, one of Germany’s rarest species. The ancient oaks in Görlsdorf Forest provide a habitat for the increasingly rare hermit beetle, stag beetle and great capricorn beetle.

Views and crane season

From the viewing platform at the Heinz Sielmann Nature Experience Centre Wanninchen, you can look out over the newly created Lake Schlabendorf and its protected banks and shallow-water areas. Thousands of cranes settle there during migration. Public crane-watching events are regularly offered in September and October; dates and prices may vary. If you plan to attend one of these events, check the current programme. The viewing platform is accessible via a ramp, including for pushchairs and wheelchairs—a helpful point to consider when planning for visitors with limited mobility or young children.

The Nature Experience Centre can be reached by car or bicycle via Görlsdorf, a district of Luckau. Signs mark the route from the local roads between Görlsdorf and Garrenchen and between Görlsdorf and Beesdau.

Plan for the Kornradenweg trail and its surface

The Kornradenweg trail runs mostly along quiet local roads and farm tracks. Some sections are sandy and may be difficult to cycle on at times, depending on the weather. If you plan to ride the route, take both the surface and the weather-dependent conditions into account.

Village church and manor estate

The village church in Görlsdorf reveals several phases of construction. The western section of the nave preserves a medieval fieldstone core, probably dating from the 14th century. In 1782/83, it was extended to the east; in 1891, transept-like galleries were added, giving the church a cruciform layout. On the south wall is a sandstone epitaph commemorating Hans Adam v. Stammer (†1753) and his wife Johanna Eleonora Sophia, née v. Pflug (†1755). The epitaph was restored in 2016. The manor estate in Görlsdorf also includes a manor house.

Culture and urban history in the wider destination of Luckau

The wider destination of Luckau offers further, distinct themes relating to the town and its culture. The fully preserved town wall is about 1.8 kilometres long, encloses the old town and makes for a good walking tour. Baroque gabled houses shape the historic town centre. In the hall church of St Nicholas, the richly decorated Donator organ delights visitors with its sound.

The Niederlausitz Museum is housed in a former Dominican monastery, later used as a prison and associated with inmates such as Karl Liebknecht. The permanent exhibition “Luckau – Gateway to Lower Lusatia. People, Culture, Nature” explores the diverse development of Luckau and its surroundings. The museum offers interactive audio and media stations for children and adults, as well as an audio guide featuring stories from the former prison. If you plan to make use of these offerings, check the current presentation in advance.

Luckau offers a variety of town tours throughout the year, including tours following in Napoleon’s footsteps, exploring historic Luckau at night, and tracing the history of churches, monasteries and prisons against the backdrop of the Reformation. Check dates and availability in advance. The cultural game “Luckau – Beautiful to Conquer” invites you to discover the town through puzzles about its history; check that it is available before your visit. The themed gardens on Schlossberg hill invite you to enjoy leisurely walks.
