Neuburxdorf combines a significant historical focus with a route through the Sternweg Grüne Heide cycling and hiking network. The soldiers’ cemetery and its various features take centre stage on Schwarzer Weg; the Eisenbahnerweg begins in Neuburxdorf and is approximately 6.1 kilometres long. This gives your trip two distinct focal points: quiet remembrance and a tour through a network of trails with woodland stations.

A cemetery with several features

The soldiers’ cemetery in Neuburxdorf on Schwarzer Weg comprises a burial ground with paths, an open area with a monument, the old cemetery chapel and an avenue of lime trees. Together, these individual features give the site a multifaceted character: the burial ground, monument, chapel and avenue belong together, although none of them alone defines the entire complex. The cemetery is listed in Brandenburg’s register of historic monuments as of 1 January 2026.

The monument’s history also dates back to wartime. On 5 November 1944, a monument initiated by French prisoners of war was dedicated at the Neuburxdorf prisoner-of-war cemetery. Since the end of the war, it has served as a memorial to all the prisoners who died at Stalag IVB prisoner-of-war camp. The former Stalag IVB site is now a place for encounters, political and historical education, and quiet reflection.

History across several periods

In September 1939, a pioneer unit of the German Wehrmacht began setting up the Kriegsgefangenen-Mannschafts-Stammlager M.-Stalag IVB on the outskirts of Neuburxdorf near Mühlberg. A history trail at the former Mühlberg camp uses 16 information stations to explain the camp’s history from 1939 to 1945 and from 1945 to 1948, as well as how it was viewed during the GDR era. Mühlberg Museum preserves the memory of Stalag IVB and the subsequent NKVD Special Camp No. 1 in Neuburxdorf near Mühlberg. The historical topic thus covers both the establishment of the camp and its different periods and the ways they have been remembered.

The Eisenbahnerweg and the woodland stations

If you would like to add a walking route to your stay, the Sternweg GrĂĽne Heide offers the approximately 6.1-kilometre Eisenbahnerweg, starting in Neuburxdorf. The cycling and hiking network also leads from surrounding villages along signposted, star-shaped routes to the Rauten, Klonplantage and WaldhĂĽtte woodland stations. An information board at WaldhĂĽtte explains why Brandenburg pines were cloned and can therefore be found throughout Germany. The station connects the tour to a specific topic from the plant world, while the woodland station names provide points of orientation across the network.

Which focus suits your trip?

The cemetery, monument and history trail focus on captivity and remembrance; the Eisenbahnerweg and woodland stations offer a different emphasis. If you are travelling together, you can consider how much time you would like to devote to the serious historical topics and whether a route with nature-related themes fits into your plans. For families with different interests, it may help to consider these focal points separately rather than planning them as a single experience.

A separate travel focus in Bad Liebenwerda

In the wider destination of Bad Liebenwerda, there are more opportunities to discover local history and nature. A walking tour of the town runs from the market square, past the town hall at Lubwartturm, to the spa park and through the restored town centre, whose history stretches back more than 800 years. The spa park extends between the town centre and the Weinberge district, along the Schwarze Elster and Dresdener Straße. At the nature park centre, you can learn about the nature park’s landscape, plants and wildlife, including the capercaillie, which is threatened with extinction. The 3 Flüsse Tour is an 8-kilometre hike through the spa town; three rivers line the route, and the stated duration is 120 minutes. Route details and duration may change, so check both before making plans. The Bad Liebenwerda Tourist Information Centre rents out bicycles with 26- and 28-inch wheels as well as e-bikes, and offers route suggestions. Confirm the current availability of rental bikes before your trip.
