Bad Liebenwerda combines a spa park on the Black Elster with a restored town centre and a wide range of nature attractions. The spa park stretches between the town centre and the Weinberge district, along the Black Elster and Dresdener Straße. Its varied highlights make the town an interesting destination if you would like to include local history, culture and nature experiences in your trip.

Spa Park, Concerts and Town History

The spa concerts in the park’s concert shell have been a tradition for 187 years and are a regular feature of Bad Liebenwerda’s events calendar. A guided tour of the 25-hectare park covers Frederick William III, his former walks there and his gift of the park to the citizens. Other topics include Love Island, the Otto Kloss Garden, natural spa ponds and a stone monument. The concert and tour offer different highlights: one focuses on musical tradition, the other on history and the park’s individual sites.

The Bad Liebenwerda Tourist Information Office offers tour suggestions and rents out bicycles with 26- and 28-inch wheels, as well as e-bikes. Check the bikes’ current availability before your trip. If you prefer to explore on foot, you can follow a town walk from the market square and town hall past Lubwart Tower to the spa park and through the restored town centre. Its history stretches back more than 800 years.

Following its renovation, Lubwart Tower was reopened to residents and visitors to Bad Liebenwerda in 2011. If you plan to visit the tower, check the current opening times in advance. Another stop for cultural history is the Central German Marionette Theatre Museum. Its “Kasper’s Worlds” exhibition presents the history of the Kasper puppet in puppet theatre in a completely redesigned museum. The Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart was built in 1883 and is located at Südring 2.

Discover Nature and Compare Routes

At the Nature Park House in Bad Liebenwerda, visitors can learn about the nature park’s landscape, plant life and wildlife, including the endangered capercaillie. The Nature Park House is accessible to people with disabilities and has ramp access, as well as a car park, courtyard and toilet. Confirm which facilities are currently available before your visit.

The Three Rivers Tour offers a practical way to explore the spa town on foot: the hike is 8 km long, follows three rivers and is listed as taking 120 minutes. The route and time estimate may change, so check the current details before setting out. This makes it possible to compare two different options for your stay: the town walk passes the town hall, Lubwart Tower and restored town centre, while the Three Rivers Tour is a clearly defined hike with a stated distance and duration.

Elbe-Elster: More to Explore Across the Region

The wider Elbe-Elster destination offers excursions ranging from industrial heritage to nature and wine. The Louise Briquette Factory in Domsdorf is Europe’s oldest surviving briquette factory. Visitors can experience working historic machinery and discover steam engines there. The Plessa Power Station is one of Europe’s oldest lignite-fired power stations and has retained its original structure. Visitors can see authentic power station equipment from the 1920s there. The guided “Path of Coal” tour passes through the outdoor bunker, boiler house, turbine hall, control room and transformer area; check the current booking conditions if you plan to take the tour.

The F60 Visitor Mine is also in Elbe-Elster district, south of Lichterfeld. Visitors can explore nearby Bergheider Lake by bicycle or Segway, or take a walk along its long beach. The Mühlberg 1547 Museum offers another perspective on regional history: it focuses on the 1547 meeting of armies, which shaped the course of the Reformation, and bears the European Heritage Label. Four major museums in Elbe-Elster district have formed a joint museum network since January 2015.

Winegrowing and historic cellars are another regional highlight. Wine has been grown again since 1992 on the southern slope of Langer Berg in Schlieben; more than 2,000 vines of the “Müller-Thurgau” and “Bacchus” varieties now grow there. The historic Kellerstraße comprises more than 30 wine cellars dug into Langer Berg from around 1540 onwards. On a guided tour, you can learn about and sample Schlieben wine; check in advance what is currently available. The 65-kilometre Apple Route also offers a guided tour of the pomological garden in Döllingen; check the date before making plans.

Bad Liebenwerda itself highlights its spa park, restored town centre and nature education; the wider Elbe-Elster region adds industrial history, wine and other regional experiences. Choose your accommodation according to whether you want to focus mainly on the town or also explore these wider destinations.
