Semlin combines the character of a village with a varied range of activities centred on water, cycling and culture. The village is one of the tourist destinations in the 10 km-long Hohennauen-Ferchesar lake district, which is connected to the Havel and Lake Witzker. In the West Havelland, Semlin is often called the “Mecca of sailing”. If you are planning a stay, you can consider whether to focus more on outdoor activities, the bathing area or village history.

Lake District, Cycling Route and Walking Trail

The Rathenow–Semlin cycling route, also known as Semliner Chaussee, is about 12 km long there and back. Several rest stops in Semlin offer opportunities to take a break along the way. The approximate route length gives cyclists a concrete point of reference for planning their day.

The Ferchesarer Weg walking trail offers a different perspective: it runs through the golf course in Semlin. This means that both a named cycling route and a walking trail are available for active days. If you are planning different day trips, you can treat these routes as distinct options rather than basing every activity on the same interests.

Bathing Area and Leisure Activities

The Semlin bathing area at Bauerndeich is on Lake Hohennauen and is designated as an EU bathing site. Its water quality is checked regularly. The route described goes along DorfstraĂźe to the lake, then turns right and follows the lakeshore to Bauerndeich. Both the name of the bathing area and the sequence of waypoints are useful for finding your way there.

Semlin also offers swimming, boat and bicycle rentals. A holiday and leisure farm also offers fitness facilities, a sauna and wellness services. It has family-friendly accommodation and a wide range of dining options. This adds further options to your stay, whether you would like to spend the day on the water or choose another activity.

Village History and Annual Events

Semlin’s half-timbered church is a simple structure typical of village churches in the Havelland. It was built in 1730–32. The Semlin Witches’ Monument is another distinctive feature: it is described as the first monument of its kind in the new federal states. Together, the church and monument give the village a cultural dimension distinct from activities by the lake.

The annual programme includes the Semlin Summer Festival and the Semlin 3-Lakes Run; both take place every year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the relevant date in advance. This lets you tailor your visit to your own interests.

Rathenow: A Distinctive Cultural Experience

Rathenow also offers historical and cultural attractions that are clearly distinct from Semlin’s village and lake district. Rathenow’s historic centre, with sections of the old town wall, Kirchberg and St. Mary and St. Andrew’s Church, is located on an old-town island surrounded by four arms of the Havel. The Rathenow Optical Industry Museum displays around 1,200 objects illustrating the history of optics. From 1800 onwards, pastor Johann Heinrich August Duncker ran his first optical workshop in his birthplace, opposite the church’s west portal.

Rathenow’s bridges also tell a story of connections within the town: the 348 m-long Weinberg Bridge links Optikpark with the Weinberg. A pedestrian and cycle bridge connects Kirchberg with the Weinberg; it was built in 2001–2002 and restores a connection after 700 years. These urban attractions offer a distinct historical and architectural perspective on Rathenow.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Plans for the Day

When looking for accommodation in Semlin, your plans for the day can be a good starting point. The approximately 12 km there-and-back cycling route between Rathenow and Semlin, the trail through the golf course, the bathing area and the village’s cultural attractions each offer a different focus. You can tailor your plans to your interests, whether you prefer to be active, spend time by the water or discover village history.
